I purchased colossal shrimp at the Safeway on the corner of Bancroft and Treat in Walnut Creek on 3/18/12, and I got a very disgusting surprise. I got home and put the shrimp in water and started removing the shells - and a cigarette butt came out of one of the shrimp!!

On 3/9/12 I was doing my usual several hundred dollars worth of grocery shopping at the Safeway on Redwood Road in Novato. My cashier and I noted my box of eggs had a carton that was compromised. She asked the bagger to get something to shore up the box. While this bagger was shoring up this box another bagger came in and started bagging where the bagger had left off. The cashier behind me started yelling at the bagger who was taping my egg box. Demanding to know "what are you doing??". My cashier explaned to him that he was helping the customer. This bully casher then starting saying "there is no need for two baggers". The baggers and my cashier seemed like children being yelled at by dad. I turned to my cashier and I said "HOW RUDE IS THAT?". The bully then slapped a piece of paper next to me stating "you can file a complaint - my name is David". I said nothing to him but I asked for the "MANAGER" who never showed. The paper he gave me was for some general complaint form in Arizona. I felt threatened by this bully, I felt challenged by this man. It was almost like he could care less - and knew that no matter what I said or complained about he would get away with treating people poorly - and enjoy it. I will not rest until someone takes notice of this incident. Not just for bullying me but being so rude to my cashier and the kind baggers. Even the customers in line behind me made comment and were shocked by this guy's treatment of everyone. This store other than the bully has great people. No idea why everyone is so afraid of this guy.

I was a loyal customer (& an Elite Customer)for 16 years at the same location that Adrenne Gifford (3 posts above supported (Hamilton Street in Hyattsville). Most of the cashiers were terrific and you got to know them over the years and vise-versa. I put up with the freezer breakdowns that were always occuring in hopes it would get better. We then heard they were going to put in a new modern Safeway near PG Plaza mall. A group of Hyattsville residents asked management just to clean up and fix the current store. The plans for the new Safeway never came to be then we heard they were closing the Hamilton Street store. Some of the reasons I heard was the constant shoplifting and lack of customers. They lost customers because people got tired of the constant freezer breakdowns, rude younger cashiers and favorite foods no longer being stocked. If you wanted a good cut of beef or fish, you had to go elsewhere. I always joked that this was their "ghetto" Safeway and in retrospect, that's how management (corporate) looked at us. It also seemed that some of the under performing managers were dumped here. Well, guess what Safeway, Hyattsville is becoming a much better market with the development on Rt 1. The "Arts" district, Busboys and Poets, Tara Thai and a list of others that took a chance to locate here and have a booming business. A lot of young families are moving here. Home prices are going up. I think Safeway missed a good opportunity. One good thing that became of them leaving is I don't run to the market everyday and no more spur of the moment shopping thus I'm saving a lot of money.

everytime I go to the safeway store in our area they never have the sale items they have in their sale adds, then to top it off this morning I went to do some shopping they had very little meat out in the meat case and no Hamburger what so ever. and asked the person in the meat department if they would have some out soon, she told me 25 minutes, so I desided to do my shopping in a very slow manner and take extra time to look around the store, so 25 minutes goes by and I go back to the meat department and she is just starting to get the meat out, and getting to the job at hand, and at least get a package or two ready since she knew someone was waiting. so I looked into the meat department window door and did not see any sign of anyone even packaging meat. the store had been open for 3 hours and noone had even stocked the meat department yet. & about 6 months ago I wanted a tenderloin steak and they didn't have any in the meat case , it was about 4 p.m. and I asked the butcherto cut me a couple, he said it would be 30 minutes before he could get to it he was going on break. how long would it have taken to cut me 2 steaks ? were does customer service come in ? and in the deli depaertment I was looking at some specialty cheese during the holiday and picked a piece up and the whole bottom side was covered in mildew. they are one of the worse stores in our area and now this is the straw that broke the camels back I am done with them once and for all.

Why safeway has so many problems with customer service and its employees can be traced to the way they treat their employees! When I worked for safeway over 30 years ago they were a great employer but over the years employee moral has decreased tremendously by cutting wages and benefits to the extent of where some employees are on assisted living and food stamps! I do not see Steve Burd taking a pay cut in fact he got a nice bonus while employees saw their hours cut. If safeway keeps this up they will see their business fall by the way side because remember YOUR BUSINESS IS ONLY AS GOOD AS YOUR FRONT LINE EMPLOYEES!

MY BIGGEST COMPLAINT WITH THE "BANDIT" SAFEWAY IS THEIR SO CALLED SALE AD'S-- THE FOLLOWING IS A TYPICAL EXAMPLE: COKE (by 2 get 2 free)AND A FREE BAG OF CHIPS (2.99) AVOCADOS .77CENTS EA. PROGRESSO SOUP.99 CENTS EA. SO HERES WHAT I PUT INTO MY BASKET 4-12 PACKS OF COKE--4CANS OF SOUP--3 AV'S AND A FREE BAG OF CHIPS. AT THE CHECK STAND THE WOMEN CLERK FIRST OF ALL DID NOT ASK ME FOR MY SAFEWAY CARD. SHE RANG UP THE ITEMS AND IT CAME TO $52.92. I DIDN'T LOOK AT THE TOTAL UNTIL AFTER I SLID MY CREDIT CARD THRU THE SLOT. WHEN I QUESTIONED THE CLERK, AND SAID WHAT THE HELL DID BY FOR $52.OO SHE SAID WELL YOU DIDN'T SLIDE YOUR SAFEWAY CARD THRU, (she didn't ask me for it before she started to ring me up) SO SHE THAN SAID I'LL GIVE YOU YOUR SAVINGS BACK TO YOU IN CASH. SHE GAVE ME $13.66 BACK IN CASH, AND QUICKLEY WENT ON BRAKE.THAT WAS NO WHERE CLOSE TO MY SO CALLED SALES PRICE. I THAN WENT TO CUSTOMER SERVICE AND ASKED TO SPEAK TO A MANAGER. TO MAKE A LONG STORY SHORT. AFTER HE REFUNDED ME MY WHOLE SALE OF $52.92 HE RERUNG UP MY PURCHASE UP AND IT CAME TO A TOTAL OF $ 22.92 A TOTAL OVERCHARGE OF $30.00 FRIGGEN DALLORS. NICE TRY "BANDIT" SAFEWAY.THIS ISN'T THE FIRST TIME THEY TRIED TO STICK IT TO ME. EVERY TIME I GO TO SAFEWAY TO GET SOME SALE ITEMS, IT'S THE SAME-O-SAME-O. YOU HAVE TO WATCH EVERY RING UP ON EVERY ITEM.THE CLERK'S SHOULD KNOW WHAT'S ON SALE AND REMIND THE CUSTOMER OF HIS OR HER SAVINGS. I CUT THIS MANAGER A NEW (you know what) AND LEFT IN A HUFF. ALL I CAN ADD IS BUYER BEWARE OF THE "BANDIT" SAFEWAY. THIS IS THE MORGAN HILL STORE ON TENNANT.

I work for Safeway. I want to be proud to tell people where I work. I have to say it is always my customers first. It has become very difficult to be in the best mood when you work short-handed. Your are left to wait just to use the restroom because there is no one to let you out of the checkstand. It difficult when you have lines of people, who are mad at having to wait to get checked out. And, when you finally get these order rung up you have to bag the order because there are never any courtsey clerks around. There are never enough clerks, so you really feel like an idiot asking if they want help when you know you will have to call several times. We are trying to give the best service we can because we want our customs to come back. I don't understand why you make us sign all these papers to give good service, you do adds for service but there is never enough of us to the very best we want to give. Now, the other reason I am writing. You stopped making Flintstone gummies, now I don't buy any gummies, as the Flints were the best. Then you revamp the store and now I have to go to Target to get Welchs grape juice bars, then you stopped carring Spice Islands Chicken Stock Base and you don't carry Ultra Brite toothpaste. Guess where I have to go to get the things I used to buy at my own store. I want to shop at my store, support my store. I know the union contract is still up in the air but if we want to stay open we have to give good service and that means not just to customers but to our fellow employees. We need to proud of stores, our employees and our company as a whole. Thank you, Carol

my name is nikki and i was in the safeway gas station in cheyenne wyoming on south greeley highway their new employee mike eckstrom was very rude and snoby to me and my mother this is night right and i would expect this matter to be taken care of. employees should not be like that and that is poor work ethic. it was very offending to me and for another thing this man mike is rude inconcideraate and snobby to customers i was not only person complaining

Am just sending the following to Corporate offices Safeway Customer Service Center M/s 10501 P.O.Box 29093 Phoenix, AZ 85038-9063 TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: Safeway used to be my favorite grocery store, from my days of growing up in California to now in Arizona! That has certainly now changed for the many reasons I want to address with you! I do not know about the other Safeway stores in the area but primarily the one located on Grand Avenue in Surprise, AZ. First of all this store seems to not have the weekly advertised items in stock—one example was last week the advertised Dungeness crabs on sale for $8.99 a lb! I went in first thing Wed morning when I saw the ad and there was no crab in stock, went back on Friday and Saturday and still no crab, when I asked a butcher he shrugged and said “oh was that in our ad?” He also said there could no longer be any rain checks issued as I had also asked about some pork ribs also advertised and not available. He said they had a few of those but they sold out early and rain checks not available! Don’t the people who do the ordering bother to read the ads and make sure items are in stock????? NOT. Another recent example was Safeway brand water chestnuts a few weeks before—still not in stock! These are just a few examples, this is a recurring regular problem—today (and last year) there were never any chocolate covered strawberries available. ( in todays ad!) I could go on and on and on with more examples but hopefully you get the point! Although you have a customer service booth there is rarely anyone there to help you! I have been told by several employees that their hours have been reduced and so they have fewer hours to get things ordered, etc Every day as you go through the store there are major empty spaces spaces where items have not been reordered and restocked. I don’t know who does the ordering but we rarely get new products introduced or restocked. Two years in a row I have purchased Philadelphia pumpkin cream cheese spread, liked it and went back a few days later and it was already sold out. Asked an employee if they would get more in and was told it was a seasonal item and could not be reordered –this was in late October or early November. HUH??? This year when I saw it come in to stores I bought 3 but also noticed it sold out immediately and was never restocked. Again, just one example of an ongoing problem. I have learned now to go to Walmart to get new products instead! Your ads are becoming almost useless and every week when I see the caption “see our low produce prices” I laugh because of course produce continues to rise week after week. And everything else-( I now buy most of my produce at either Trader Joes or Walmart) Produce Dept at this Safeway is now more frequently than not out of products such as jalapenos, basil etc. I have asked to have certain products stocked but was told to fill out one of your “feedback” cards And I have done so several times but with zero results. A few items I have asked for are Sunbird Hot & Sour soup mix, rice flour and sushi rice. I could go on but will spare you more details! Unfortunately I am buying more and more things at Walmart and Trader Joes these days and I hate going to Walmart and their prices used to cost more, especially if you watched the ads but that is no longer true and they carry more variety of products. I wish to keep this anonymous as the employees know me and I think would retaliate if they knew!

Just posted letter I was sending to the corporate office in Pleasanton and copy to Customer service in Phoenix, AZ--used the name "annoymous" and wonder if it will even post! After then reading the others complaints on here I see I am not the only one with a major problem now with Safeway. I have also found many of the employeess rude and obnoxious and think they are also angry at the company for reducing their hours and making the working enviroment less than nice and so taking it out on customers! Used to be you would see people sitting in the Starbucks section reading newspapers and magazines and so I started going in on Sunday mornings and looking to see if the coupons included were worth the price of the paper (newspaper now worthless otherwise) and one day one of the clerks demanded that I buy the newspaper because I had looked at it (did not take the coupons) and I refused! Spoke to manager who said we are not allowed to look through magazines or newspapers and now I see no one does so anymore! I suggest everyone who posts on here also write to their corporate office and local offices too!

Our local Safeway in Fort Bragg CA (a small town) has gone down hill since it's current manager arrived. He has little to no customer service skills and couldn't manage a Flee Circus. I have informed Safeway Corp. that he had failed to staff his deli at lunch time to accommodate the customers, I have seen no change since filing a complaint. Last week the current manager was seen yelling at an employee in the parking lot and other times yelling at homeless customers in the front of the store. I guess it is time to switch to the other two options in town Harvest Market or Purity

I have been shopping at our local Safeway #0835 in Colorado Springs for over 10 years now. I have watched it deteriate in many ways. The customer service counter has to be the worst. If an employee is actually there it could take forever. The worst one of all is the manager Susan, in which many many times I have had to wait while she finishes a conversation with a fellow employee before waiting on me. There is hardly ever more than one checker if one at all, but of course self check out always has someone to assist us in doing their job, I WANT A RAISE. I once worked for Safeway, not so proud of that now. GOOD BYE SAFEWAY YOUR TOO MUCH FRUSTRATION FOR ME.

I as well as many others it appears will not be shopping at your stores any longer. A very common thread of inappropriate actions and attitudes of your stores staff have been found wanting. Rudeness and no compassion for customers seems to be one of your stores staffs strong suits. Not a good thing when dealing with the general public. Many people have been loyal shoppers to you in their communities for a very long time as I am one of them. I am appalled at this type of treatment at anytime but especially in this economy one would think a company would nearly do anything to keep their local clientele base? Obviously this does not seem to be a concern of yours? I am glad for the fact though that I do live in the suburbs of Denver and have access to many King Soopers/Kroger stores as well as Sams Club and Costco. Freedom of choice is a wonderful American liberty.

I just went shopping at Safeway. I normally do not go there, but it was by my son's math tutor. I bought $30.00 worth of steaks and when I got home, I realized they were not in the bag. I looked everywhere. I checked my car twice, then went back to Safeway and told the manager. He said he did not believe me and had to look at the security cameras, which took a half an hour. When he came back, he said he saw that the steaks were placed in the plastic bag and that they left the store. He would not replace the steaks and intimated that I was lying. I am out $30.00 in steaks! I was not allowed to see the video, so I am doubting HIS word. I am so furious! I will never shop there again! I tried calling the customer service number for Safeway and was placed on eternal hold! What a horrible grocery store! This was at 108th Street and Via Linda in Scottsdale, Arizona.

WoW! Safeway, wake up folks. What can you possibly be thinking. How can you servive with these things going on. I remember a strike that happened a couple of years ago. Does anyone in your organzation remember that. This is much worse.

wow! i was just looking for a phone number and saw all the neggy complaints. here's a note to hopefully brighten your day! i shop at the Safeway in Livermore California--the one near the Orchard store. they are Always friendly, helpful, quick at checkout, polite......everyone from the baggers to the manager. they know me by name and face and never fail to stop me to say hello. not all your stores may be awesome, but this one is.

Dear Sirs: Just now, I leave the Safeway store #1428, 299 S. VanDorn St. Alexandria Va, I was accused of shoplifting by the Produce Manager Mr. Jim Evans. I did in fact take a few extra banannas and put them in my markdown bag. He told me this is shoplifting and if I didn't like it he would be happy to call the police and I can ask them. I informed him I am certainly NOT a criminal, and I spend over $1000 of dollars every year at this Safeway alone. I asked him why he would argue w/ me over what is .45 cents when I am purchasing over $20.00 here right now. He insisted this is wrong, "what if everyone did this" etc. I informed him if everyone did this you'd sell more banannas and have to throw away significantly less every week! I also informed him how "stupid" he is for being dumb enough to have a customer never return again and lose much more per year, and asked him how would it be if "everyone decided to stop shopping here because of bad attitudes like yours?" I hope he is fired and never hired again for anything close to working w/ the public.

Your Phoenix,AZ Safeway Public Affairs office has denied my Lions Club from selling candy in front of your Sun City West,Az. store .The reason given was because of corporate charity collection at checkout. The same customer that gives at the checkout will still do so even if they purchase our candy. All proceeds from our candy sales go to support a camp in AZ for challenged children and young adults at no cost to them or their families. Please reconsider your companies decision.

I have heard that the Safeway on Hamilton street in Hyattsville Maryland will be closing in Feb of 2012. I do hope that the corporate office officials who made this decision change their minds and allow this location to remain open. The Safeway in Langley Park has been closed for a few years and is by some truly missed. This location on Hamilton street has some of the most customers friendly people I and others have the pleasure of comming in contact with. The staff at the Hamilton street location are always helpful, polite and seem to really care about the concerns of their customers. If this safeway needs improvement why not closed it for awhile and do the updates needed but to closed this location permanently will be a lost to this community. We have no other location close by for people with or without transportation unless we want to go to a busy mall area which at times is not safe. This location is safe and convenient for this community. Please reconsider and keep our Safeway and its staff here at the Hyattsville Maryland open. Thank You.
