I will never again shop in a Safeway store. I just read the story regarding the family who was seperated because the pregnant Mother (whose husband was also arrested and was retired from our countrys' armed forces) forgot to pay for a sandwich she had been eating while walking through the store in Hawaii(they paid for the other $50 worth of groceries, she just put the sandwich wrapper in her pocket to have scanned and forgot to have it scanned - read the whole story - it is very scary that something like this would happen in America). The last sentance in the wire story from the Safeway Company's corporate spokeperson was the icing on the cake. When he said that the company would review the footage and decide whether or not to press charges my blood pressure shot through the roof. Are you really considering pressing charges Safeway? Are you kidding me? What has happenned to common sense? Safeway, you should be ashamed of yourselves! The store manager, security and yes, even the Honolulu Police Department, should all be taken to task for the escalation of this "horrfying" incident. The family's lawyer was right to bring this to the media's attention. Safeway better pray and hope the Mother delivers a healthy, on-time baby after all the "HELL" this family was put through over a $5.00 sandwich. Shame on you Safeway! What were you thinking; Oh, that is the problem, your weren't thinking!
I have never shopped at your chain and now know I never will and will also notify every friend and family member of mine to also never shop at your chain. I just read a most horrendous story involving your chain and a store in Hawaii. 2 parents and there toddler daughter were treated worse than actual scum off the streets, they were arrested over 2 sandwiches totaling at $5 and their daughter taken away by child protective custodies for 18 hrs over a very innocent mistake. They hadn't stolen them, they offered restitution and an apology and the "policies" your chain has led to what I can only imagine to be a very traumatic experience for a 3 yr old girl and her parents. You and your whole corporation should be ashamed of themselves.. I pray your business goes under!!
Never again will I EVER shop a Safeway store again!!!! What they did to that family was humiliating. Live in Colorado and there as been two Safeway's in my area that have closed down - go figure. The incident that took place in Hawaii could have been taken care within the store - for real you need the police for a 2 dollar sandwich - even after they spent $50 in groceries (sounds like intent to steal).
I seen the article on yahoo about the man and woman who were arrested and had there kid took from them over a 5 dollar sandwich that they did not even take on purpose my opinion of you guys im sure does not matter but I wanted to let you know that you should be embarresed of yourself put yourself in there shoes they made an honest mistake and you humiliated these people and one of the ones you did this to served our country so that you could have a buisness terrible terrible terrible I do not and WILL NOT EVER shop at any of your stores.OH AND REMEMBER WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND.!!!!PATHETIC UNAMERICAN AND SELFISH IT IS SO SAD THAT PEOPLE LIKE YOU GET TO EVEN HAVE A PLACE OF BUISNESS. AND IF THERE WAS A NEGATIVE 10 STAR YOU WOULD GET IT FOR SURE.
I was horrified to read in the newspaper about the treatment of the young family at the Honolulu store. To cause their child to be removed from them is absolutely criminal. You need the pants sued off of you for your treatment of these people. I will NEVER shop Safeway again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Pregnant mom says sandwich arrest was 'horrifying' I for one will never shop at your store again. Your managment need to be replaced.
I am horrified at the story I just read about how Safeway handled the couple in Hawaii!!! Where is your humanity?? Do you people hire people with NO common sense or decency???? Are you such a greedy corporation that you condone immoral acts of your store managers!! Shame on you!!
Its beyond comprehension that the Hawaii Safeway store traumatized a young family the way they MISHANDLED the incident regarding a failure to pay for two sandwhiches. I would love to see a full days boycott of that store with numerous protestors parading with placards. The names of the store managers and the clerks involved should be made public for the horriffic and inhuman treatment of the child. Having a family member in law enforcement personnally I will say that the Hawaii police department could have cited the couple and remanded the situation to the courts. Lastly, I would think that there would be a SANE judge who would throw this out and even tell Safeway it could have been handled much more humanely. I can say for sure that we do not have a Safeway store in our area of Ohio, and that says something for the good senses of our part of the country.
I think the managers in hawaii should be held for 4 hours. It is their responsiblity to notify the police and from the police to arrest someone if the officer believe's a crime was committed. The managers should be arrested for false imprisonment and the security guards they are responsible. The family should sue and the public should not shop at safeway stores of which I will not.
I just read the Yahoo story on the couple from Hawaii. What poor judgement your employees showed. When i was pregnant and had to take my kids shopping I would grab anything off the shelves to keep them busy and quiet. I have four kids from 34 to 16. In all these years i have never ran into a PREGNANT SANDWICH THIEF! These employees and the Barney Fife you have guarding your store should be gathering your carts. i stopped going to the Vons down the street awhile ago. I got so tired of the check out people always asking for donations. The donations we make as a family are ones we have looked into. After ready this story we made the right decision. If I ever live or visit Hawaii I'll never shop at Safeway there. It's truly pitiful that a 30 weeks pregnant lady to whom was on the verge of fainting ate 2 sandwiches. She intended to pay for them but forgot. Then a security officer went ahead & called the police. She & her husband were arrested. Couldn't they give this woman the benefit of the doubt?! CPS traumatized her child because of this & it could've been avoided. They could've caused her to go into premature labor. What a bunch of insensitive & non-compassionate people. I'd fire the people directly involved.
I have been shopping at SW for as long as I can remember and presently live a block from the one where I live in Oregon. I am so tired of the poor quality of your food and being over charged each and every time I shop. I am sending you my receipts all of over charging, or items not bought. last week I bought two boxes of your spagetti and got it home for my dinner guests only to find a huge amount of active green mold growing on the noodles. SICK. I am so terribly disguested that i really don't even want to shop with you any more. I do shop at different locations and am sick of having to back track with my receipts to collect my refunds, many times I am so disgusted I just throw the bad items away. Moldy berries, spoiled milk, rotten produce... sick of it
I hope Safeway gets sued to the max for causing the extreme grief that the parents incurred for forgetting to pay for a couple of $5.00 sandwiches (after buying and paying for $50.00 of groceries) which resulted in their arrest and separation from their baby daughter. Shame on you and the idiot manager who runs that store (in Honolulu, HI). Glad to say it's been years since I have set foot in a Safeway and it will be many more years based on your employees' incredible lack of judgment.
To Whom it May Concern, On 30 October 2011 approximately 1730 (5:30p.m.); my companion and I walked into the Gig Harbor Safeway on Pt. Fosdick Dr. We shopped for a few items and as we stood in isle #10 choosing a tea, we noticed two females and a male employee chatting and looking down the same aisle. As we headed to a check stand Andrew, a checker, immediately glared at us and turned away. We began placing our items on the next register, where checker Kim S. looked directly at us, finished helping the customer at hand and then walked away from the register without a word. Kim turned her back to us and commenced in a personal conversation with bagger Rosalee. As we are standing there, looking towards the two women Rosalee caught my companion's eye and just laughed. We proceed to unload our items, moved to another register where Linda V (supervisor) greets us, and ask how we are doing; we reply, "Sadly, not well". Linda's only comment was I'm sorry to hear that. As we had begun to unload our items from Kim S's belt, she says to Rosalee, "that's how you do it" and she walked back to her register and started helping other customers. I shop Safeway almost daily, and it is truly sad to see that in this day and age; Safeway tolerates employees treating customers with disdain and allowing the employee to impute their personal views and prejudices upon and towards the customer. I feel convicted to address the matter and not let this incident skew by without admonishment. At the very least, I expect to receive an apology, for I will return to the Gig harbor store to speak with the store manager on this matter on Monday, 31 October 2011. Safeway will no longer be my daily stop on my way to work and I will surely announce to all who I know and to all who will listen of my experience. Regrettably, D.R. Garris
I shopped at the Vons on Centinela in Culver City Ca. I bought something that I thought was 2 for 5 dollars. It rang up for 5.49 and had 60 cents club savings bringing the price to 4.89. Since I thought it was 2.50 I went back to look at the tag. I saw the 2 for 5 dollars was for another item and the tag for the item I purchased was 3.47 with club savings. I went back to the register and the manager went back to check the price. He brought out another package and said this was the item that went with that tag. I went back to take another look and the tag for 3.47 was gone. I returned all the groceries that I had purchased. This is exactly why I try not to shop at Vons and I will go out of my way to tell everyone not to shop there. So for a little over $1 your company has lost all my business and everyone else I can convince not to shop there. That is a terrible policy to save loosing $1.
I am so tired of Safeway bumming charity donations off me when I shop. They are a multi-billion dollar company. I am sure they give less than $3000 back to local community each year, yet they take over 25 thousand dollars in donations for their own personal charities from the community. Stop donating at the stores --- write a check for your own charity!
Staff becoming ruder and ruder in supermarkets. I'm now avoiding Safeway in AZ.
On June1 2010 I went to the store in Desoto Tx. I found a Diamond ring & turned it in. The manager Heidie took the ring & did not take my name or anything. My husband said by Texas law they have to take your name & after 6 months at the lastest, they should give it back to the finder. So the next day I called & gave them my name to put on the ring. I ask what the policy is for Tom Thumb lost & found. I was told the follow the law of Texas lost & found law. So I wait for 6months & try to go to the store to collect the ring if no one claimed it. The manager I talked to said I had to talk to Heidie, I could never got connected with Heidie on the phone or also left before I got to the store. So I wrote a letter to the the store manager Sandy Gonzalez after a year of not hearing anything from Heidie Or the store. So I wrote a letter to the current store manager Sandy Gonzales. After a few weeks I finally talked to Mrs GonZales. I was told that 1 week of turning in the ring-you domated them to a charity? Everytime I try to connect with Heidie, I would ask the clerk if they still had a ring in the safe it anyone claimed it yet? I was told no one has claimed it & was still there.Over the last year. I did the honorable thing & turned in the ring. If it was I who lost the ring, I would want someone to turn it in. It would have taken me longer than a week to retrace my steps to find it. I found a diamond tennis bracelet at another store. They sent me a letter saying someone claimed it. The next time I went back in the store the manager I turned it into was wearing the bracelet. I have not been back since. This was a very expensive diamond ring with 3 large daimonds. So do you follow the Texas Laws of lost & found? or do you donated items after a week? There was a news story about someone turning in a valueable item in the store, & they refuse to give it to the person who turned it in after no one pick it up. There was a big up roar. People boycotted the store & it had to close it's doors!!! Why do the honorable thing & turn something in? If I had know I would have left my name & Number, in case someone called about it & keep it. Or maybe I should go to the news about your policy! Please contact me back about your your policy, Because not all your stores in Texas follow the same policy on lost & found!!!
