I was deeply disappointed today (March 29, 2012) with the employees at LA Fitness in Lansing, IL. Today was Family & Friends Day at the club. The flyer read that you could bring a person in for a complimentary day of work out. When I did just that, the girl at the front desk ignored us for the first 5 to 7 minutes. When I told her we needed to get in for the Zumba class which was starting in 5 minutes, she insisted that my friend sit at a desk with a person to be registered. Once we let that guy (Marcel) know that she was not interested in a membership today, but wanted to get in for the 8pm class (which by now we were over 10 minutes late for) he stated that if she wanted a membership, tonight would be the night to join due to the sales that the club was running. I grew increasingly annoyed as he insisted that she needed to be seated at the desk while they gather her information, because we were now missing the class that I brought her in to try. As I left "Marcel" felt the need to say "God bless you ladies". I took this as sarcasm and I am owed an apology from him and management. If this was "bring in a family or friend, so that we can attempt to sell them a membership" day, the flyer should've read that way. This is the worst way of trying to get new members and I am sure LA Fitness will lose more memberships than they will gain with these under handed tactics and extremely poor customer service. This was embarrasing, and LA Fitness made a very bad impression. I plan to cancel my membership if nothing is done about this awful treatment. There are other fitness gyms in my neighborhood.
I have been satisfied with the club on Sugarloaf in Duluth, GA but am growing concerned as I see evidence of relaxing standards, and buying the lower class Bally’s is not a good sign either. Over the years I've seen the same cleaning crew busily working to keep things clean, until recently. Now, those familiar faces are gone and there is only an occasional sighting of a single person. When members take the time and initiative to mention issues, even safety issues, some go unresolved. Staff that just a few weeks before said that they were going to address specific issues, like locks staying on lockers for months, are no longer around. TVs that should be for the distraction or enjoyment of those particularly using the aerobic equipment are kept on channels few people watch at home, and that is dictated here in Duluth, GA by corporate in Los Angeles!? I write only out of concern, as I've been a member of several clubs over the years, and they all ultimately failed - and we learn to recognize the warning signs. Getting hyper sensitive about profits at the expense of quality, and not listening to your members is a sure sign that over time many will move on, without saying a word, and that spells trouble for the business.
I enjoyed the gym itself, but when I tried to cancel my membership and others connected to my account I had to hunt down forms and when I sent them in, they canceled mine but not the others connected to the account because they did not have the right bar code. I would think that they (LA Fitness)would have read what I wrote on each form and canceled each one that I sent in, but of course since the other forms did not have the right bar code they did not. I even called corporate office and they stated that they could not do it without the bar codes for each individual. Supposedly now they have canceled all three of the memberships after me calling them, but if it was that simple to cancel when I called to complain why couldn't they have done it before? The customer service is absolutely terrible when they are not taking your money!!!!!!
IN HOT WATER AT THE GYM I never knew the hot water I’d get in at a local gym until I waded into a hot tub and saw one of the gym staffers assault a fellow bather when he paid more attention to the person he was speaking to via headphones than the operations manager, who yanked at his headset, telling him to get the hell out. He yelled at the staffer, a woman, and warned her never to touch anyone the way she had grabbed the headphones. Turns out, she pulled a wire and broke the $300 device before calling the police on us and threatening to strip us of our gym memberships for not responding to her demands. Philadelphia cops, however, appeared at the scene and advised the young man, a 6-foot 8-inch professional basketball player, how he could file a private criminal complaint against the manager. I gave a statement and called the corporate headquarters asking for immediate action against the woman. Not once during the episode did she identify herself as a manager. She repeatedly refused to show me any identification when threatening to revoke my membership at the LA Fitness Center in the Andorra section of Philadelphia. How did this all come about? The hot tub had been closed and barricaded for use the past four weeks as repairmen worked diligently to fix whatever problems they discovered. Today, the yellow tape surrounding the tub had been removed and persons entered the tub for a good soaking. There was nary a sign anywhere cautioning bathers to keep out. I had worked out on the tread mill 25 minutes and swam a half-mile over another 25-minute spree when I slunk my body into the bubbling water with jet air shooting streams of pulsating pleasure onto my back, hip and other sore spots. I had been soaking, paying no mind to the African-American male at the other side of the pool who was in deep conversation on what I took to be a business call. No more than five to seven minutes had passed when a person I had never seen before approached the side of the tub and told me I had to leave. I had just begun to meditate, and had yet to calm down from the nearly hour-long stress I had subjected my body to. It was an Asian woman who spoke to me. I didn’t understand what she said. I thought she was one of the cleaning staff. This gym retains a lot of Hispanics for housekeeping, and I – stupidly – stereotyped her as a member of the gym’s house-keeping staff. She said there was no chlorine in the hot tub. So what, I thought. She said we could introduce germs into the water. Again, I thought, so what. I even played lawyer with her, telling her that I’d waive the right to bring any charges against the gym should I get a contagious disease from my fellow bather, who had to lift up the side of his headphones to make out what she was saying. The tub is situated in a closed section of the gym next to two shower stalls. An Olympic-size swimming pool occupies the great bulk of the room, and it is difficult to hear because of the constant running of water and the echo sound each word creates when someone speaks. She threatened to call the police if I didn’t get out of the pool. I heard that loud and clear and told her I’d get out once she got my fellow bather out. Off she stormed, ordering him out, and grabbed the headphones when she claimed “he ignored me,” when in reality, he was still speaking to someone else. She yanked at the headset. Now, there are certain things you simply don’t do in the United States. Jim Croce, a Philadelphia-area singer who has since passed away, put it this way: “You don’t tug on Superman’s cape. You don’t spit in the wind. You don’t pull . . . the mask . . . of the ‘ole Lone Ranger. And, you don’t mess around with Jim.” Well, here you could put the name of most men wearing headphones and trying to relax after a hard workout at the gym. You don’t mess around by yanking at an object that is an extension of the “workouter.” He yelled at her, but never cursed. She told him to “get the hell out” of the tub, and at least one of the swimmers in the pool overheard this and reported it to the police. I’m sure she gave a different story to the authorities. I kind of felt sorry for her because she handled the incident so badly and probably saw nothing wrong with using force, no matter how slight, to demand someone else’s attention. You can’t do that and expect cooperation with your management style. The young man, who plays for an international team out of Venezuela, exchanged e-mails with me and I agreed to assist in any action against the gym manager. He might file a private criminal complaint if he couldn’t get restitution for the expensive headphones. I’d settle for a corporate manager to investigate this and ensure that nothing like this ever happened again. Hot tubs were made for relaxation, not consternation.
I have been with Ballys almost 20 years, and since LA Fitness bought over some Ballys locations-El Centro, Hollywood, CA, they tried to jack up the membership price. They lied and said that Ballys provided them info that my membership is $250/year, and I told them I don't pay that price, and they asked for a contract, I don't have a contract with Ballys anymore, but Ballys should provide them that with my history. I called Ballys and said they turned over everything, the only thing they can offer is my history payment, I emailed it to LA Fitness manager and he said that's not good enough, he needs my contract, during this whole thing, he then said my limit is over, and I told them that other Managers told me I have 3 months to pay, he said "NO", now he gave me another excuse to jack up the price again. So don't talk to that Ahole Manager Tom Vellero, he was rude, and not wanting to give me his boss name & number. LA Fitness & Ballys are both sleezy companies, people should stay away from them. Don't support them. America needs to clean up.
LA Fitness in Apple Valley, MN is a club that you may want to think twice about before joining. The member advisors as well as the trainers are very misleading when they try to get you to join. When I went in to discuss my account I got the run around and treated very badly. The guy would not even listen to me. I was called by them and he yelled at me on the phone and would not listen to me what-so-ever. Customer service is not one of their strong points, nor does it even come close to the level of terrible. It is many levels below that. When I asked who I could contact about this situation, I got the, "This is a privately owned club and I can not give you any of that information." Well, LA Fitness good luck in surving your crap customer service adventure. Your club is terrible!!
I have been a member of LA fitness for several months now, coming from 24 hr fitness. I like the gym very much because classes are great, but just recently we lost an excellent instructor, Saida Rodriguez, it was a total shock to everyone!!! Someone so good at her work and an asset to this gym because she always have a crowded class all the time..that only means one thing..., she is fun! She makes extra effort to make everyboby happy and content each time we attend her class. How can management let go of her just like that just because someone or some other instructor got jealous or misjudged her. She deserve a fair treatment. In behalf of members of LA fitness, we ask for your kind consideration for Saida Rodriguez to return as instructor, we believe that you can make our time worth it by having her back once again.
I belong to the LA Fitness Center at Kingdom Square Mall in Capital Heights, Maryland. For the last several days the facility has been withhout showers, the whirlpool, swimming pool, and almost two months without the steam room. I'm quite disappointed as I use these items to help try and control my arthritis. It appears that LA Fitness is unwilling to address these matters and has taken a uncaring attitude for the quality of services offered at this facility. Recently, employees have started to clean the floors, something that did not happen before. I will give the facility another week before moving on to a facility that respects the need to provide what customers are paying for. I wonder what would you do if you were consistently bombarded with an ill-functioning facility?
I've been requesting a copy of my contract aka agreement and apparently since this was done so long ago, over 16 years, before they had an electronic system in place apparently it is impossible to get it? I went to a branch and they told me that I needed to contact corporate, I called corporate and they told me that I needed to go into the branch. Ah, Bureaucracy at it’s best! I guess that’s what I get for being a loyal customer for 16 years!
I'm a former Bally's member and glad LA Fitness took over. I've gone to true LA Fitness clubs in the area like Silver Spring, Crofton, Pasadena, Arlington and Sterling. A lot nicer than Bally's for sure. I work nearby and rather not go back to Mid-Pike Bally's.Nearest non-Signature is 15 miles away, so I knew I needed to upgrade to go here. I stopped in to ask what the difference was and cost to upgrade. Shahid gave me a quote. Not bad but I'm already prepaid thru 2014 so it would be foolish for me to pay that much more for one club. He said their cardio machines had TVs, digital lockers and towel service. I said your Arlington club already has all of that. That's when he admitted that Arlington was once a Signature level but had to be downgraded to regular club status. Didn't work out for them. Yesterday I came in for a tour. Asked the salesperson on duty, Diane, what the difference was between this and a regular LA Fitness. I told her I knew Arlington used to be a Signature and I've been to Pasadena where they have the same Life Fitness cardio machines with TVs. She said this is a higher rent area (OK), two blocks from a Metro (I have a car), we have cleaning people (I certainly hope all clubs do) and unlike Silver Spring, you don't have to pay for parking. I said, but you know I don't have to pay for parking at ANY of the other six clubs around DC you did NOT mention. Nice try, Diane. So what you're saying is let's make these customers pay more so you can pay your rent. Besides towel service (which I don't use), Shampoo and Conditioner in the shower, giant econo-sized moisturizer bottle and a few leather chairs, I don't see much difference. I guess digital locks (which they had to remove because it was more trouble than its worth) was just another gimmick. She said it's really safe here, you don't have to worry about stuff being stolen from your locker. First of all, I don't think it's a statement she can stand behind. Locker theft can happen anywhere! So I guess she was intimating that since they slapped on a Signature sign and charge extra for this club in this brand new building, they don't let *wink*wink* sketchy people in. It's the dream they're selling...but for a steep price! Then she checked my account and told me what it would cost for an upgrade. I said while not a bad price, I would still pay almost twice what I paid in a year. She asked me how I was able to go to Arlington, because it's in another state. Maybe we only allow that in the first month, she said. I said if you read the official Bally's takeover statement on your website you'd know all Bally's National members retain national access to all LA Fitness clubs, minus Signature and some NY clubs. Nice try again, Diane. I've done my homework. You should do yours! Maybe I can explain to their sales staff in "Used-Car Salesmen" speak (which I'm sure they'll be great at if this job fell through), if I'm looking at a Chevy and you want to upsell me to a Cadillac, give me a great reason to choose that Cadillac. I'm willing and able to pay more if there's a big difference. If the only difference I see are a couple extra cupholders, foglamps and floormats but the pricetag is way higher, I'm buying the Chevy. For an upgrade, I want to see a top-of-the-line navigation system, heated leather seats, nice rims, etc. I totally understand why Bally's was in bad shape, you get what you pay for. And I know you're not Bally's, thank god. I also understand your need to sell new memberships to grow the company and maintain/upgrade the equipment. But don't play your customers/potential customers for a fool. I'm more than willing to pay more for a better club and better customer experience. Everywhere I read about your sales staff and their hard selling tactics, leaves a lot to be desired. Now just give me a valid reason to buy up. Better define your club level differences and let your customers decide if that's right for them. Until you open a non-Signature club within a 5-10 mile radius or when this club gets downgraded to regular status like Arlington, I think I'll pass on the upgrade. As far as the other regular LA Fitness clubs around DC, I'm very impressed and it's a definite upgrade from Bally's. I'll still look forward to going there on the weekends. For the time being, I'm joining RetroFitness on Nicholson. They're charging A LOT LESS! And the only "dream" they're selling is a fitter, trimmer body. Because ultimately that's what I go there for. Their machines are the same Life Fitness with TVs. The place is very well kept. No waiting. So what if they're in a strip mall and not a swanky building. I'll be driving there in my tricked out Caddy and not helping Diane pay for hers.
Hey! I like LA fitness.... But I also like that they used to put steam rooms in all of them. The newer gyms don't have steam rooms... which honestly, is kind of annoying. There's nothing better after a long workout to chill in a steam room. So... Stop trying to skim a little bit more money off of the new gyms.... You make a lot of money already!
I belong to the LA Fitness in Crescent Springs, KY. After reading a lot of these reviews, I realize that I am pretty lucky because, for the most part, the gym is clean and most equipment is in good working order. Although, I have noticed that they have started having a recording about "club pride" telling the employees that they're supposed to go around the gym and tidy up and check in with customers. The employees at my LA Fitness never do this! My main frustration is that I mainly joined this gym for the pool. In the 3 years that I have been a member the pool has been closed down for various reasons, at least twice it was because of a pump. The first time this happened, the pool was closed for almost a month and I was treated very rudely when I complained about it. And there is no way to complain to anyone at corporate, because the number I have found is either busy or the one time I got through I was on hold for over an hour, until I finally gave up and hung up. Now, the pump is broken again and this time they said it could be a week to get it fixed. They are still taking my money for my membership that I am not using because the pool is not open. In addition, I have Type 1 diabetes so I take less insulin in the morning when I am going to the gym so when I show up and the pool is closed it has a very negative affect on my health for that whole day, namely higher blood sugar. When I asked the manager if there was a way to email members when the pool was closed or any other notices (class cancellations, etc.) she said they couldn't do that because they had no access to email and there were too many members. Give me a break! All of those computers and no access to email. They could have members opt in if they wanted to receive these notices. This is so frustrating!
LA Fitness has turned out to be the biggest rip off I have ever experienced. They lure you in - take your first and last months dues...I went faithfully over a period of almost 1.5 years and when I lost my job needed to cancel my membership. I went to my local club and they told me to take this form and send it in. I did just that. Month after month I am being charged not only for the monthly dues but a $5.00 fee for being late - AND this is AFTER IT WAS CANCELLED. I called corporate and was berated for not following protocol and using the certified letter even though I had done it on line AND through the local club. I called again to the local club today to find out why yet again (after receiving confirmation of the cancellation) why I was still being charged...guess what NOW THE PHONE SAYS NOT IN SERVICE. I guess they didn't get enough money from cancelled peoples checking accounts. This will be reported to the better business bureau. And anyone who reads this - DON'T SIGN UP WITH LA FITNESS - everyone I know has had an issue with them. There are other less unscrupulous gyms who do not STEAL YOUR MONEY WITHOUT PROVIDING SERVICE and THEN SHUTTING THEIR PHONE OFF!!! DON'T JOIN THIS RIP OFF COMPANY
I am writing this letter to express my frustration in dealing with your company. Recently, Bally’s fitness of Bellevue was sold to LA Fitness. At the time, I was assured that current membership (senior) rates would be honored at renewal time. Instead, what I am now told is that LA Fitness, despite my having a receipt with the amount of membership renewal, will not honor it. The reason they give is that I have no contract with my name on it showing the senior rate. Checking with Bally’s I learn that LA Fitness indeed was sent information as to what I paid last year, on March 3rd. What I am hearing is that LA Fitness does not wish to honor the senior rate and instead insists I pay the original rate which is ~$100.00 more!! As a senior, now on social security, the extra $100.00 makes more of a difference to me than it would to your corporation. I would like LA Fitness to reconsider and honor the membership payment receipt I have , and they have on file. It seems that LA Fitness is not embracing or honoring its seniors. I hope they will reconsider their position!!
I have been a member of the LA Fitness in Hunter's Creek for 5 plus years. This facility was recently renovated. It's was beautiful, but now because of the lack of cleaniness, it's quickly becoming disgusting. There is never any hand santizer, cleanser for the equipment (that the TVs tell you to wipe down), or paper towels. This has been an ongoing problem, and when I talked to the manager, I get the same old story; the supplies didn't come in with the delivery from corporate. When I suggested they purchase bottles of Purel, she actually said the store didn't have any money. We would just be out of hand santizer for 2 weeks until the next shipment. Mind you, there's a dollar store right next store. Apparently LA Fitness Corporate office doesn't care about the cleaniness of their gyms, but I bet the health department would. I rejoined because management assured me that all these problems would be taken care of. I guarantee you that I will move to another gym when my memnbership expires if something isn't done to correct these problems. Hey, Corporate Hotshots, this isn't rocket science! Hire cleaning people who actually clean and managers who give a damn!
A Chicago member Bally's now LA Fitness for 15yrs. I must say what a total disappointment. From the lack of communication of the buy out/aquisition, all the way through the lack of professionalism, on every level really. Where to begin?... Employees eating finger food at the front desk, never smiling, completely uninformative, they can't find this, they can't find that, there's never any toilet paper, soap, paper towels, recent theft in the locker rooms,(big time), then claim they're not responsible. Now, when you do see someone cleaning, they're usually dusting the empty equipment next to you. Much too busy to fill those toilet paper, soap, or paper towel dispensers I guess. Strange!! You never see any employees in the areas where people are working out, probably because they're too busy eating at the front desk. The few clubs that I've visited since the transition took place have been so neglected, it's almost as though a Ghost bought Bally's. Everything has basically gone to s**t! Get it together LA Fitness...please!!!! Utilize the limited employees, and resources you have right now by properly training and perhaps a better job in initially screening them?!?... Please try to make it a pleasant experience for your paying customers.
I signed a contract for personal training. The next day was the 1/2 hour session of measurements and 1 endurance test. No talk of goals/needs and NO questions about personal health restrictions concerns... etc. 3 days later the first session no explanation of why exercises were being done, no goal setting just do it, the next day was 1/2 hour session of virtualy the same thing no goal setting boring and no ability to engage the trainee .... no talk of safety nothing hardly worth the money they railroad you into. I really wanted to get myself in shape was excited about the whole thing ... now find myself locked into a contract with a company that has little integrity. Nobody seems to know what they are doing and when asked who to go to with concerns managers state " I dont know their last name..or how you can get intouch with them (corporate)... they (corporate) dont give us the information to help you because they expect us to handle it" Poor business practice/ customer service going on in the LA fitness world I have spoken to many of my friends and collegues in the health care arena and else where and all are appalled and many have had the similar experiences.
I have been a member for a little over a year, I am an active athlete and still have a membership in a Fitness 19 in my town. I joined your facility in Round Lake, Illinois because of the pool, I plan on competing in a tri-athalon. Overall my experience has been pretty good but recently I have been have become increasingly dissapointed. Most of your employees are friendly and helpful, espcially Adrian who mans the front desk early in the morning. When I first stared going to you club I saw employees do a walk through at closing time, re-racking weights and picking up empty water bottles and paper towels. Lately however my experience has been less than optimal. When I arrive in the club at opening time (5:00 AM)I find trash littered about, shower stalls with underwear and empty shampoo bottles on the floor, empty paper towel dispensers and most distressingly no toilet paper in your bathroom stalls. On a recent a Wednesday evening I walked into the mens locker room to find the floor strewn with trash, including a jalepeno pepper on the floor. Another annoying and possibly dangerous situation are unattended youger children, pre-high school age, running about the club and using the lap pool as one would a recreational pool, rendering it uselss for training. This morning I was among a group of about twenty people waiting for the Spin Class to start. The instructor never showed up. This is the second time in two weeks that this has occurred. I am hoping that this message will prompt a reply and some positive action.
i am a former employee of la fitness in Renton Wa. i went through the worst hiring process of my life. MY manger Lorenzo was very unprofessional and made me feel very uncomfortable and so did he with a new hire that end up quitting a day later. He's very double sided and talks like he's on the street to me and his reason for doing so is because he said ill understand cause i am from the street. Me making a mistake in my life when i was younger should not be held against me and be judged for now. If there was certain ways that the company felt about me, they should have never hired me.It was just a horrible experience and i plan on making sure i take this to the to to ensure nothing like this happen to anyone else. I was also should how to lie to be and get them to spend thousands of dollars that not really needed no training. Not a good place of business. Ripping people...
