I want to thank Safeway for their generosity in hosting the LPGA in Portland, Or. The hospitality tent, with all the free food samples, was above and beyond. The Safeway personnel were friendly and cordial. This is a wonderful way for your company to support the community. Kudos to the people in charge. Well done, The Kordash Family
Not knowing where to send the following, I'm going through the avenue. I have been a very long time shopper at Safeway stores, mostly those in the Concord area. An idea for marketing which I hope you will consider is to have a special marketing on your bakery departments. There is an employee at your Denkinger Store, Concord, CA who would be great in an advertisement for the bakery department, Kim. She has the most unusual good speaking voice which could be good for one of your bakery department advertisements. If this is the wrong place to send this to you, there isn't anything available where a customer can provide their comments and suggestions.
Dallas, Oregon store. Today at deli dept took several minutes to get the attention of employees who were busy chatting. Young gal was told by another employee to come assist me, which she attempted to. She asked what I needed and as she grabbed the meat, the assistant store manager came over and told her to follow him so she could get her employee number. She told him she was helping me, he told her to put the meat down and follow him...she did and I was left standing there, mouth agape at what happened! When I called the store to make a complaint I was informed that the manager wouldn't do anything about it, that I would be better off contacting corporate...which I will be doing in a letter momentarily.
After buying flowers at my local Safeway and going home with them, I was suprised to see a spider infestation on the stems when I started to put them in a vase. Immediately, I sprayed the flowers with insectiside and threw them in the trash. Later that day I returned to Safeway to inform the manager the flowers I bought had spiders in them, and all he asked me to show him a receipt showing I bought the flowers. I wasn't asking for my money back, but I wanted him to check the other flowers in the store to make sure this was a one person problem. All he did was to once again tell me to go home and produce a receipt to get my money back. As a retired district manager, regional manager, and later director of a large drug store chain, I was taken back with the manager's inability to understand the spoken word. Well, I did go home, and now I drive 11 miles instead of 3 blocks to shop at a clean Fry's Grocery Store. An uncaring manager hopefully is the exception for the chain, but I will never know as I will forever shop elsewhere.
I was shopping at Safeway store #0267 at 2940 W. Valencia Tucson Az. 85706. At 15.40 on 7/31/2011 in the afternoon. While shopping there at the meat counter, I found some (BF chuck Steak thn.) The meat was marked marked lower than the rest, so I picked it up and did not know if it was a manengers specal. This is something they sometimes have. I picked up all eight packs. When i was going thru the check- out, the cashier, Mark Valenzveal stopped in the middle and informed me that he would not sell me the meat at that price and took it all back. He informed me that it had been mis-priced and that it was ridiculous that i would even think that they would sell it to me at this price. When I tried to explain to him that I was not the one marking the prices and it was them. Yes, it may have been mis-marked, but i was going by the price that was on the package and was willing to buy it for that price. I was polite in trying to explain to him that the price was the price. He kept telling me how ridiculous it was of me to even think that they would even sell it to me at that price. He imformed me it was his right not to sell it to me. At one point, under his breath, he made the comment (stupid white women). This upset me and asked him what he said. He then return to tell me he would not sell it to and I could do anything I want, but he refused to sell it to me, and there was nothing I could do about it. At his point i asked him for a copy of the meat prices and his name. I continued my purchase and then left the store.
I have shopped at this particular Safeway store (south-side Pueblo CO)for last 20 years plus. For last several years, I carried a small backpack-like purse with me. Last month, I got stopped before I entered the store. The bouncer at the door said, that according to the new policy, no backpack are allowed in the store. "You can't go back there with a backpack" she said. She had seen me every week, ever since she was placed on the "bouncer" position by the door. On occasion, we chatted for a while. I have always come shopping with the same purse. And, all of a sudden, she won't let me enter the store, because I carry the purse on my back, like a backpack? How about the fashionable handbags the size of a medium suitcase? Are they OK? It is just the small purse, that resembles a backpack? How about some common sense? I left, but on my way out I filled out a complaint card, that supposedly was to be delivered to the store manager. 48 hours later I had no feedback on the incident. I wrote then to the headquarters. 19 days later, I received a half-ass apology, mostly explanation that people steal, and the bouncer, albeit rude, was essentially correct. Only she was not supposed to "attach any guilt", understand it as you see fit. Also, in the letter from Safeway, the clerk handling the complaint wrote that the manager will be notified and prompted to respond. It's been a month after the incident, and I still want to see a response from the store manager. In the meantime, I cut up my loyalty card, and sent it back. A response to that was another half-ass apology, essentially trying to convince me that it wasn't really such a big deal, and they count on my loyalty for years to come. Good luck with that. Come what may, I am not going back shopping at Safeway. After years of being a loyal customer, I was insulted and treated rudely. I don't need that. There are other stores. Goodbye, Safeway. King Soopers, here I come!
I live in Las Vegas, NV. and I used to shop at the Vons on windmill and bermuda but I stopped ever since the new store manager Laura took over!! How she is a manager surprises me I feel sorry for the employees that work with her all the employees look so miserable!! Its not the same Vons I used to shop at. everytime I go in that all i ever see that manager do is stand in customer service and talk about her employees and she is so rude she seems more concentrated on putting down her employees than helping customers! I have waited several times for returning items and she always ignores me and once she said to me cant you see my employee is sick I dont know how to do returns I can't help you with that. Also I get my hair cut at the salon next door to it and all the employees there were talking about how rude she is and apparently they have had terrible encounters with her too, One of them even said they overheard her telling an employee they were worthless!!! All I have to say is how can corporate allow a manager to behave like this? is this the new way of management that corporate is training their managers to treat their employees and customers?? If so then you sure are heading for being out of business !! I refuse to shop there until I see a new store manager there !
I frequent the Hazel Dell, Washington, Safeway store on my way home from work. Over this past year, the checkout lines have gotten longer and longer. I doubt this is due to more and more people shopping, it appears to be because fewer and fewer checkers are scheduled to work during this busy time of the day. Lines used to be no more than a couple people long; many days there are now six, eight, or more people in line – and that includes the so-called speed lane. I would guess that these “quick stops on the way home” are a large part of your business (especially the add-on impulse buys). So you’d think it would be advantageous for you to schedule more checkers during the busy times of the day. Before shoppers become so frustrated that they to go elsewhere. After reading the comments posted at this site, it appears I’m not the only one frustrated with long lines. Apparently, something needs to be done at more Safeway stores than just Hazel Dell.
Are Safeway's Customer Parking Lots Safe? On Thursday 6/30 at 5:06 pm I returned w/ my shopping bag to Safeway's parking lot in Mt. Vernon, WA only to find my car victimized by a "hit-and-run" driver. No notes left on the windshield. Front bumper and right front panel were scraped and dented, costing me around $508, which happens to be my insurance deductible. I asked the store manager, a Mr. Christie, if his store had surveillance camera or recorded video. Mr. Christie politely replied: "sorry, there's nothing I can do to prevent such incidents." He added, "Yes, we have surveillance but it's installed only at main entrance not at Safeway's customer parking lot (which sat between the supermarket and the busy Safeway gas station - comment added)." I asked Mr. Christie if management was doing something to address this growing problem in "his" parking lot in an area which has seen a growing peace and security problem. He simply shrugged his shoulders, looked at me, and lamely muttered "I'm sorry, there's nothing I can do, sir." Witnessing the event was an employee named Isabel who should be commended for bringing the matter promptly to Mr. Christie's attention. A loyal Safeway customer for decades, I'm disappointed at Mr. Christie's pat answer, which you would expect somewhat from a bureaucrat, waiting for his pension and from one expected to simply take orders, not to think ways to improve customer service and safety in his own store. His response does not do justice to the fine reputation enjoyed by Safeway and its employees, such as Isabel. I am sending a copy of this email to LETTERS TO THE EDITOR at Skagit Valley Herald, the region's premier newspaper, which, it is hoped, would send a crack reporter to do a piece on Safeway and other outlets in the area. The article focuses on the issue of providing surveillance video in their own parking lots to ensure customer safety. Thank you. R. Ludan Burlington, WA 98233
This is in regards to the Safeway store on Amador Street in Hayward CA - specifically manager Alicia Ruelas. I just got home from the store and am so angry that I had to comment on her. Thursday, June 30, 2011 Around 10:30pm or so. Only 1 register was open and there was a long line of about 15 to 20 people. I asked one of the employees if there was anyone else that could open a register since the line was so long. He said he wasn't allowed on registers so I asked to speak with a manager. He referred me to Alicia Ruelas, who was at the time at the coin machine. Before I got there, he told her there was a long line. I heard her say "I can see that" and rolled her eyes. I asked her if there was anyone she could call for backup and she said that she was the only one. She then rudely said that she was helping a customer at the moment. I told her I was just asking since there was a line of angry people. She then started saying to the other customer she was helping and the employee that helped me, "I can't hear what she's saying" and kept doing some hand motion that you basically do when you want someone to hurry up and rolling her eyes. Instead of stepping away from the machine to hear me, she just ignored me. Very unprofessional of her. Granted the machine was on, but she did manage to answer my questions prior to her making that comment. About 5 minutes later, she opened up a register. Unfortunately, we were in that line since we were one of the next ones in line. She was surprisingly fast considering how slow she was at the coin machine. She didn't smile or really say anything to the customers - I certainly didn't expect her to say anything to me since she was so rude earlier. The customer behind us thanked her for opening a register. I heard the comment and looked back at Alicia. She was staring at me and said in a really snide way "Have a good night." I told her the same thing in the same way she said it to me, then she started telling the other customer and the bagger that I was being rude and told me to get out of the store. I was already walking away from the register but she was saying it loud enough for people to hear how professional she was. As a manager, she needs to learn to be more polite and respectful - not only to customers, but to staff as well. She obviously is not manager material and should be retrained in customer service. I also expected a manager to be dressed in the same type of clothing as the employees, not just an old blue t-shirt. I couldn't believe she was the manager when the other employee brought me to her. Normally I wouldn't comment or write about this - I've dealt with rude people before. This instance was just so wrong that I needed to bring to your attention what type of employee Alicia Ruelas is. Horrible.
I have been shopping at Safeway for several years and have family members employed with Safeway. I have been applying for a job with Safeway for several months (since 01/01/2011) and did have an interview with no result. I am very persistent and check on positions regularly by speaking with management personally. I have seen so many employees come and go I can't begin to explain my dismay. I live within walking distance, have several years customer service experience, very hardworking, honest and dependable. I have had employees within Safeway call to let me know they are hiring. When I go to management ( I can name names) I am always told the same thing. "There are people who come in everyday to check on applications, but I don't have any openings". Next time I go to check on my application they have hired more people. Safeway openings are posted current. Please advise me of what to do or how to handle my situation. I am very discouraged and disappointed on how this particular Safeway in Pollock Pines, CA ( and HR from Reno, Jen) are handling hiring procedures. Thank you for your time and attention regarding this matter and look forward to your reply. Sincerely, Vicki L. Weaver (530) 647-0298 vickifx@comcast.net
Money Order problem. 6/27/11. I purchased a 20.00 dollar Money Gram money order from Safeway, Hampshire Ave, Silver Spring, MD and found out that my bank would not accept money orders any longer. They told to take it back for the cash. I took it back to Safeway and the Assistant Manager told me that Money orders was final. What???? Are you kidding me? A money order is transferable back to cash. Cash for Cash- I told her that it made no sense and then asked for corporates number. She give me the number and said-go ahead and call they are just going to tell you the same thing. I called corporated as promised and sure enough after talking to them for what seemed like hours, they told me the same thing. They said that what ever the stor policies is-is what they go by. I was pissed. She told me to call the 1800 number on the back of the money order and they would be able to refund me. I called the number and the recording stated that if I wanted a refund than it would cost me 15.00, meaning that I would get ONLY 5.00 back. Are you foreal????? You mean to tell me that I lost about 16.00 dollars. The fee Safeway charged and another fee from money gram. I called Money Gram to ask if maybe I can cash it out and the lady on the phone told me NO, they do not cash their own money order. In this economy and without a job I really need my 20.00. I feel rob! Safeway sold me a product that I can not use and when asked for a refund I can't get it back? On moneygrams site they talk about the convience of buying a money gram money order. The say you can get a refund and now I have a 20 dollar money order that no one will cash. I am so damn mad. The next step is contacting the better business bureau on SafeWay and Money Gram.
On Friday, 6/24 my wife was shopping at 2525 Tualatin Valley Hwy, Hillsboro OR. She had already waited in line and had her groceries on the belt when the cashier had a question about a customers food voucher. The cashier, instead of calling a manager up to the register, went to the manager's office, leaving everyone waiting in line for over 15 minutes. Eventually the young man that was bagging groceries found another manager and someone started ringing up groceries. The management at this Safeway needs to be reminded that the customers time is valuable.
I was at the bellvue and Kipling Safeway in Colorado. I waited 15 minutes for someone to help me in customer service to buy tickets for a rodeo. They paged customer service twice and still no one came to help!!! The ladies checking people out were trying to help but why was there no manager or customer service people??? I ended up leaving a going to king soopers were they had somebody behind the customer service desk that helped me get those tickets in 2 minutes. When I called to leave a complant at safeway I was told that store didn't exsist and she would pass the message! Even though I loved going to that store (because no one was ever there) I now know why no one shops there. King soopers will now be were I shop.
Re: New Safeway Store Policy regarding "backpacks" and "gym bags" Apparently, recently, Safeway implemented a new policy, to wit.: Safeway no longer allows backpacks or gym bags in the store. They must be checked in a locker near the store entrance. When I went to a local Safeway (340 E McDowell Road, Phoenix), the security guard and store manager informed me that I must check my "purse" in a locker near the store entrance. I told them that my "purse" is not a backpack or a gym bag. They said that by their definition it is a gym bag. I have been taking my "purse" into Safeway, Walmart, Frys, Kroger, Walgreens, Home Depot, etc., retail stores for many years, with no objection from store management. Will Safeway Corporate Headquarters please specify exactly how they define a "purse" vs a "gym bag"? As Shakespeare's Puck was wont to lament: "What Fools These Mortals Be!" Pat Moss

For five years we have shopped at your Safeway store #2676, 9101 E. Baseline Road Mesa Az. Not to mention the years we have shopped with Safeway in numerous states. I can not understand the decline in your product and cleanliness. What has happened to Safeway and it's good name????? I cant't tell you how many times I have reported past sell dates with the lucheon meat at this Baseline store. The lack of items we have purchased no longer being stocked. The lack of knowledge of employees. The it's not our problem attitude. Well just who's problem is it????????????????? There was a manager (Tina) who was wonderful. Knowledgeable, courteous and concerned. She has been gone awhile and the decline of this store is just painful. My husband went to this store this morning. One of the items on the list were eggs.He came home with a dozen large eggs squeezed into a medium size container. The grade on your carton was "B" not A or AA. "B". No pack date, no sell by date and definitely no re pack date. I was concerned about the smell as I began to boil a few eggs. I went on line to see what grade "B" eggs were. I am shocked to discover. Grade "B" don't usually make it to the retail stores. Except apparently to this store. I had never heard of grade "B" before. Grade "B" is usually used for baking or sent for making other products such as mayonaise etc. But hardly ever sold in reatail supermarkets. I have tossed the eggs in the trash but did call your store manager "LARRY" Hmmmmmmmmm! That was an experience. He didn't know what Grade B was. Did know the carton was what he calls red I refer to as orange. Didn't quite understand why I wasn't happy about no date showing on this carton anywhere nor why it should be. He did explain that these were repacked eggs from other cartons with broken eggs. Well that was a relief. Eggs from other cartons with no dates from any. Don't really know how many different areas these eggs may have originated. With all the egg scare not too long ago. What in the world is Safeway thinking????????????? Are you begging your customers to leave you? Are you closing the location located on Baseline (which you should)? Please if you plan to stay in business. Hire some humans that do their jobs.
On Saturday May,21,2011 I went to the store in Cupertino ca, on Bollinger rd the manager her name is Mary, I know her, but I do not think her name is Mary anyway this is not the first time I had trouble with this store, they are racist, bias and the store is way over priced than other Safeway stores in the area plus the food is out dated and some of it is old.....very bad...the management is very lazy about keeping that store well stocked and keep it competitive and clean like the other stores I am very upset, I had a basket full of high priced food and I took it to the counter, the customer ahead of me was paying with foodstamp card EBT they told her the system went down that is a lie and I am tired of this store doing this to people who have a foodstamps, I had about $100.00 or more worth of groceries in my cart I had to leave my food there the manager said all of the safeway stores system went down, that is a lie that same night I had to take a bus to another safeway, because I do not have a car the manager knows that I told you she knows me and has been rude and will not cash or make any payments to my visa card saying she can not do it that is a lie, this store has lousy customer service but I live right down the street from that store and I have to shop there but I do not have to be treated like this and the quality of food is compromised because of the way they present theme self, this store needs to be monitored and cleaned up-----I love safeway stores, but this one is so awful, right from the management to the clerks there night time manager needs to be fired we should not have to be treated like this and the food...what is with that, rotten old food, when you walk into the store it does not look appealing or friendly, they all are mean and have no personality at all....nigh shift....the day shift people are better, and the food looks a little more fresh, but if you shop at night for get it.....food is open, the meat has blood on the pkgs this is bad contamination please something needs to be done....my e-mail is dm4alice@gmail.com 408-642-1907...if nothing is done about this store I will blog about this safeway to everyone i know until something is done
While I shopped at Safeway, 8830 N. Ivanhoe St. Portland Oregon, I had to use the toilet. When I went in the door, the place was pretty dirty, but opened the stall door to find dried feces on the toilet seat. -dried as in had been there for quite some time. I backed out immediately, deciding it was not a healthy place to be, and as I stopped to wash my hands my hands, spoke to one of the store employees washing up at the sink next to the one I was going to use. The sink also was brown with dirt, and i don't mean a little. I spoke to the Safeway employee, saying quite simply stating the obvious- " This place is filthy". He replied that "a lot of people used it, and a lot of people abused it", and started to walk away. I further said "That should indicate it could use cleaning a little more often." The safeway employee walked out the door. This being Sunday, I am calling the health department in the morning. It should not be the customers that have to deal with the health department in order to maintain a safe and reasonably healthy enviroment at Safeway, but for the well being of all who shop it seems the only logical and practical conclusion. I have noted that none of Your correspondence here that I can see today has recieved a reply. I understand that keeping a toilet clean in todays challenging social enviroment can be a challenge, but if Safeway cannot meet that challenge, they should be in a different business more in keeping with their capabilities. Thank You Mike
We ordered two full sheet cakes for our CEO's going away party. When we arrived to pick up our cakes they were not ready. We asked to see the manager, Scott Hill, and we were told that if we didn't like these cakes we should go somewhere else and order cakes. We were stuck becuase there was no where to go to order more cakes in time for our celebration. We were given two cakes hastily done at the last minute, that were no where near what we ordered, and were given a discount on one cake and were forced to pay full price on the second. We had ordered cakes with flowers the color of the color our company uses and ended up with white frosting and little rainbow squigles. From now on we will we will be going to another store for our cakes.
