I was shopping in this store a few days ago! This Dollar General, Harp's and Family Dollar are the only stores within a 5 mile radius. When I walked in a short older lady, her name is Bonnie was working, she didn't greet me. It was around 7:30ish or 8:00. I got the few items I needed and then continued to wonder around looking. Around 8:50ish she told me that the store was closing and that I needed to wrap up my shopping. I not only thought this was rude but when I had a sale item that said it was a sale item, it didn't ring up correctly as it said on the sign. I told her about it, she huffed and puffed and then went to find the sign. She came back and said that it was the wrong item and that she would give me the discount but this would be the ONLY time she would do it. And it was in a rude tone of voice. I didn't appreciate her attitude towards shoppers and the store manager is also always very rude as well! Needless to say, I don't shop there very often! But I thought that other customers shouldn't be treated this way either.
I have a store very near my home that I am VERY happy with and will give it a 5 star (Munroe Falls, Ohio). I visited another store today in Akron, Ohio at Midway Plaza (Britain Road, I believe). I had my grandson with me who is an infant. First, there were no carts inside the store so I had to go hunt for one in the parking lot. Next, going into the store, the door snapped shut on my ankle and I nearly fell. This was around 2:00 today and it is now nearly 10:00 and it STILL is swollen and hurts. There is a bruise and the impact caused cramping up my calf. I was not able to walk right for at least an hour afterwards. The cashier SAW this happen and asked if I wanted to report it to the manager. I said someone had better do something before this happens to a small kids and breaks a leg or ankle. Upon checking out, she told me she told the manager and he is aware of the problem and has reported it. BUT why couldn't he put a sign up that the door is broken or damaged or whatever and tell customers to NOT use the door? That manager is not manager who cares about his customers. This is absolutely not acceptable.
I ask myself is it really Store Policy or was it racial profiling? 14 year old black boy ("my son")was asked his age at the entrance of Dollar General Store #4670 in St. Petersburg, FL and kicked out supposeably because he is under 18 and not with an adult. I have taken my son to that same store several times before, did store policy change from one day to the next? I don't know but what i do know is that my son walked in the store alone while i was parked lyterally at the entrance and i witnessed them question my son and turn him away not once, but twice and it wasn't until i entered the store myself demanding an explanation that my son was then able to enter the store and make his purchase that took him no more than 5 minutes. VERY DISSAPOINTED, CUSTOMER SERVICE WAS A JOKE!
I have read all the other complaints and it would be interesting to find out if you have resovled some of the problems.I owed and run a convient store for 16 years. My priorty was the customer. I wanted them met with a friendly hello and waited oon promptley. I recently moved to Coffeyville Kansas and I have traded often at local Dollare General. At first the managers and her workers were there to assist and wait on you if there was a line they called up one of the other workers to assist today like many other days there was 15 in line some with large amounts of merchandise others not so much about 5 others started to join the line and another clerk finally come to the front.Suggestion send out an undercover boss from you office to work a week in coffeyville ks and also insome of your other stores.By the way the other manager and all her workers are gone and it is a new crew--gives your some thought as to why was it the company or did you put in a new manager that didn't want the old crew.
Wow. As I read these comments, I am appalled at this kind of service. I work as a Cashier for Dollar General, and worked at different locations. As I start reading, it further hurts me to know people are being treated this way. As an employee of Dollar General, we are constantly under the spotlight of being professional and treating our customers with respect. Personally, I am storing this stories in my mind for when I work. After having been treated as an inconvenience in other retail stores, I constantly strive to make sure when I am working to serve a customer I am making it the best experience for them. I try to greet every customer, ask how they are, and if I can be of assistance. On clearance items, I have personally worked to try to give the customer what they richly deserve. There is some things I strongly believe D.G. should change. I only hope whoever reads this, will realize that you are making a difference with me.
i just have a question about the coupon $5 off when you spend $25. My dg store says you have to spend $25 after yo.ur coupons. I would love to know how it is to b handle. thank you, llinda miller@mimimiller2@me.com
I have been purchasing from the Local Dollar store since it opened a few months back I spend over $100.00 a month there .I purchased a track phone .When I got it home I noticed the Back cover was missing so I returned it to the store. The manager was not around . The attitude was your been screwed and we don't care I left my number for the manager to call me when he arrived but they ignored me. To be a manager at Dollar general you must hate people and not understand good business practices Thomas H O'Neill
Dollar General treats employees unfair they never have enough help,They over work them you can't be just a cashier you are stockers too they give there employees no safe place to work,we are always getting robbed, daily theives bums living behind the building, they drink mouthwash to get drunk.People are rude and think we have nothing to do but sit at the register. They can't keep managers so you have other people from other stores covering the dms butt. They need a better way they also don't honor holidays we work all of them!
I went to Dollar General #11075 this morning to purchase a few items. While I was in the store, the manager, Darlene came up to me and demanded that I give her my purse. She said that they were being audited tomorrow and they have had a high count of theft. Therefore, I had to leave my purse in the front of the store while I shopped. I took this very offensive. That she pretty much accused me of stealing. No one has the right to take their customers personal belongings such as purses just so they don't get anything stolen from them. She said that they also take diaper bags and any other big bags that come in the store. This is not right and you should not let your employees or stores be allowed to do this to people. It was kind of humiliating, especially when other customers in the store are watching as she tried to take my purse.
I am terriblt disappointed to hear on the news that Dollar General is considering selling beer in their stores. WHAT IS THIS WORLD COMING TO ??? I have always considered Dollar General to be a "family oriented" store. I hope that you will give serious consideration to NOT making this decision. I am not trying to be naive, but I take my grandchildren there to shop and buy...and I do not want them exposed to the sale of alcohol there. Please reconsider...and consider the effects this will have on children who are in the stores with parents
I worked for DG for two months. The DM forgot to input my paperwork for payroll and I didn't get a paycheck for three weeks. So I kept complaining about it to HR, payroll and my DM. Guess what? They finally gave me three weeks pay in cash. But I got a write up for it because it made my store under for profits that week. Then the DM brought her kid into the store. The kid screamed and yelled at me because we were out of her favorite type of soda. I had ordered it but it was on back order. Not much you can do, right? The kid told her mom who came in and yelled at me in front of the staff and the customers. Then she told me to not bother returning to work because it was obvious that I cared more about a paycheck than the company. Well, since she tried to screw me out of three weeks pay, I kind of had no interest in actually working for them anymore. But when I called HR about her, I got told that I had threatened her kid and that I had quit for no reason. Yep, they treat their people like garbage and have a policy of assuming that everyone who comes into the store and doesn't buy something is stealing. I watched our DM call up LP because a customer changed her mind about something and left it on the register. That meant she was stealing! What a messed up company!
Why the heck do you not accept master card by now??? you just lost a $50+ sale as I could not use my credit or debit 'Master' card how stupid!!!! I went to Ollies instead they have their heads turned on and they got the sale, get into the 21st century guys your loosing money!!!! I cannot be the only one who will now avoid dollar general as I do not carry cash. Regards John
After reading several pages of complaints about Dollar General Stores, it begs the question - What is corporate doing to change their public image? I work discount retail management, and although it is impossible to please every customer, it is not impossible to provide great customer service. In the end, all problems have a root cause. If you don't hire quality people an set your expectations of professionalism and proper conduct, you won't be able to provide a good service to your customers. You're making a profit now, and that's well and good...can you imagine how much of a profit your store/company can make if customers seek your stores out because the prices and the experience are great? DG Corporate, are you listening?!?!? Do you even shop at your stores, or is the expeience too unpleasant?
Hi The Dollar General was a really good store for a long time. Then just recently all the old empoyies and managnent got fer up with this company and left. Know all the new people that work there are rude and disrespectful of the customers. This store consistantly rips the costumers off, I pesonaly have been over charged 3 times know so I will not be back. The way they are doing this is to advertise or just price and item lower then the register rings it up for. It is now cheaper to go to anyother store than a DG store I am starting to believe this may be the new store policy...............
I go into the Dollar General store on the corner of Karlov and Roosevelt in Chicago Il, a few times I week and after 5pm the busy part of the day they refuse to open more then 1 cash wrap. So I I'm writing this to let you know I have created a video of the long line and I also have placed it on YOUTUBE under the name of "long line @ Dollar General on Roosevelt on Karlov" and this needs to change or I'm gonna film your store everyday and make a post to YOUTUBE under the same name. Sincerly. A Shopper.

I worked at the Dollar Store in Crab Orchard, Ky for over a year. I was Asst mgr after only 6 months. I missed only one day the whole time I worked there. Stayed over when needed and came in when needed. I was forced, along with otheres to work off the clock for 30 minutes to a hour everynight. 2 days after I gave my 2 weeks notice, I was called on Friday night and told not to bother coming in anymore, that I had been replaced. It was told to the District Mgr Robert Donaldson, that I had quit with no notice, and he blackballed me as not being rehireable. The manager I had was fired just recently for working employees off the clock and I am still not able to return to Dollar General Store as an employee. I loved my job, and have had customers come up and tell me they missed me and I should come back. But, because of a lie, I can't. I am contacting an attorney about getting back pay for time I was forced to work off the clock. Maybe they will offer my job back.

Our complaints here in Alabama is we are hearing you are going to start selling alcoholic beverages. If this is true we hope you you will think this over before this happens. Almost every time I go to town I go to the Dollar General. It seems like a family store, but it want be if such takes place. Don't you feel that THERE IS ENOUGH problems in this beautiful World God created? No one knows when GOD will return not any preacher or any individual, but HE will return some of these times soon. Be ready to go. There are many people that is against this not just me.
@RoyHughes That is a load of crap, they take every kind of card, they just don't give money back with them. They probably just didn't want to push the button and wait the few extra seconds for it. And I used to visit Dollar General more than once a day since it was so close to my house, but after working there for 2 days and quitting because of the atmosphere and the other employees I have decided to drive a couple extra miles just to go somewhere else.
