Ok,I work at a Goodwill in South Carolina,my greedy Ceo's name is Robert Smith, his old ass not worth a shit VP,is Tom,Corporate is in N. Charleston,SC,and my district mnagers name is Cindy(smokeaholic)Kaufmann.Anyway, enough of that, where I work no matter how much work experience you have,if you are hired as a sales associate, you get 7.25 an hour, the "leads" or supervisors, get about 8.25-8.50 an hour, the assistant mgr,low-mid 20s annual salary, and the store manager(even if its a big store(get around 40k+ annual salary, the GM and AM,both get bonuses for reAching sales goals, and maybe other incentives, not sure.In my region they are required to have a minimum of 60% of their staff to have some sort of documented psychological or physical disability,so keep that in mind when dealing with odd associates, most other companies would never hire these people cuz they can't perform to company standards. We do help the community some, give clothing and such to need families,schools,etc..but I wouldn't say a lot though..employees get a dismal 20% discount, and can't shop except for when clocked out and merchandise hasn't just hit the floor, WE ARE NOT allowed(at least my area)to hold stuff in the back, take stuff home, etc, even though people are doiin shady stuff all the time,I see it.They have a group of people with more severe disabilities come mon-fri,they come adult homes, private residences, etc, brought on company van, they clean bathrooms daily, and mostly hang clothing to be put onto floor, also keep in mind they get paid about 10$ for the 3-4hrs that they are there for, pretty horrible huh, since they get a disabiliy check somehow, its legal to do so.The work environment is germ infested, people get sick all the time from each other and merchandise,Goodwill receives grants, and other subsidies from the government for hiring disabled, helping find employment(if they have a workforce center),adult ed programs,etc..clothing that is stained or too worn goes into a bailer to be bailed, and they get about 500$ per bail, merchandise is also put into "gaylords",large cardboard boxes, when stuff that is donated is not working or not in great shape, electronics, computer stuff, cardboard, metal and shoes are all put into these gaylords to be sent off to be sold by bulk/lb,Goodwill is tAx exempt, thus merchandise is tax free and they don't pay property taxes, sometimes their land that stores are located on is donated or at very low cost. Yes employees can be rude cuz its a very stressful profit driving business,BUT,the customers are crazy, with people buying and seeling stuff online and such to make money, getting the good stuff is very competitive,a lot of loud, yelling customers,fighting,etc..it seems like shoplifting frm customers is tolerated(they never charge or prosecute),BUT employees get written up all the damn time for stupid shit.GOODWILL is EVIL and GREEDY beyond comprehension, they make a killing and yes their prices are high sometimes, but do u know why? Its because managers have some much pressure to make sales goals, and alweays want to make bonuses, coporate is riding managments ass all the damn time.oh and btw my D.M.,Cindy Kaufman, well her husband owns and operates snack machines in the stores(3 of them) in my area..she is profiting off of her poor ass employees, she's a greedy fucking arrogant bitch, that's called CONFLICT OF INTEREST, yoou fucking morons..so I hoped this info interested you :).
shame on you people, both my husband and i are disable ,living on a very small income,no medical ins.and have all types of. illness.we have to take turns buying our meds, him one month,me the next.to us goodwill meant we could go shop sometimes and get excited about a second hand item.over the years we have made many donations to gw,i hope at least the proceeds help their local needy community, but,i doubt it.WHAT IS HAPPENING TO THE HUMAN RACE .we no longer look out for each other
Three weeks ago (June 17 2011) I slipped on a hanger on the floor at your Oak Ridge Tn store and had to go to the hospital by ambulance for a knee injury....I had witnesses to this and it was clearly a case of negligence that the hanger was on the floor (several people told me they had seen it there for at least 30 minutes). My knee is still giving me problems (as I have had a knee replacement on that knee from a previous injury). I have YET to be contacted by ANYONE from Goodwill OR their insurance company and I am receiving bills for this that I do not know what to do with. I am on disability and cannot pay these. I thought SOMEONE would have contacted me by now.Do I need to contact an attorney to take care of this or do you think we can settle this without all that? The store has all my information and the Corporate office should have it by now. I will wait a few more days to hear from someone with Goodwill and then I will have to turn it over to an attorney, because I am still having problems with this knee and need to go to an orthpaedic dr.to have it checked out.Thank you,Cynthia McKinley
I've been working for goodwill for about 5 months now.. when they hired me it was to work as a sales associate. About a month ago i found out they were hiring night managers and i decided that i could handle the job so i told my store manager and assistant regional manager and they both said i was ready for it, so i started training and i was doing really good at doing the paperwork, etc. After almost 3 weeks of training they told me i could not longer be a night manager... why? because of my age and that i had to be 21 to do the deposits. i'm 19 years old. But so what? i'm well capacitated and know what i was doing at the job, even the store manager told me i was one of their best cashiers they have. What bothers me about this is the fact that they made my hopes go up, and made me waste my time and their time.. Shouldn't they have said something before when i asked about the position? All the store manager told me was "I'm sorry but we cannot longer keep training you to be a night manager" even though i was pretty much done with the training, and that she was sorry.. that's all i got from it. This happened in Central Tx... is there some kind of help i could get from this? to me this seems unfair. Any Advice?
I, also, have become increasingly dismayed at the high prices! Today I went to get a B.D. present for a grandkid- got very nice items on "special" at Target. Not even on the clearance racks! I decided to go to Goodwill a bit afterwards and OH my gosh- 3.00 on some of the quite used things! And okay some very nice blankets, but, still--USED had 30.00 on them! And suitcases that were nice, but, USED and a tad banged up- 60.00!!!!!!Sure they were probably a 100 new- but that is why I USED to shop Goodwill- I need bargains. Similar suitcases, not long ago, were on special at Macy's for 30.00!!!!!! The prices are getting too high even at Goodwill, it does seem true. I bought a couple of things that were fair priced- some ladies goods that do indeed cost 25.00 new- I got for 6.00. And you have to really really dig and spend too much time searching at Goodwill now. I am being spoiled by Savers, who sorts things not only by sleeve length, knit or blouse-, but by size too. You can get in there and out and the prices are like Goodwills.
Wow. The goodwill in Bellevue Nebraska has the RUDEST workers I have ever encountered. Seriously. Goodwill needs to take a close look at what they are suppose to stand for and maybe teach that to their rude employees. I am no longer ever going to shop there. Pathetic how they treat people.
Good Afternoon, I'm not sure if I am writing to the correct dept but could you pass it on if am not.I live in Vermont and come to Ocala 3 to 4 times a year to visit my daughter.I have to say I have never been to thrilled with the Florida Goodwill's because they have no discount cards, and they do not 1/2 price different color barbs every week I shop at good will in Vermont at least 2 times a week.OK with all that being said today when I was in your Ocala store I noticed a wig that I really liked however I didn't like the price it was 45.99 and I couldn't understand why,I went on line from my phone to look up the wig style thinking it may be a very high end wig I couldn't even find that name brand I found wigs with the Name of the style Nina but none that were made by Nina.I brought this to an associate's attention and she went to talk with the manager to see why this was so much, she came back with the response they found them on live for 100.00 I let it go because I was really just trying to relax today and didn't want to get upset.I purchased my other items and went to the car.I called my husband to see if it was alright if I got the wig and he said yes.I went back inside and asked if I could try the wig on in the dressing room because I felt very uncomfortable trying to decide and look at yourself with it on in front of alot of people you would have thought I was asking to take it I was told no so I ask the girl who had helped me earlier and she let me(I didn't want to have to tell them that I was losing hair and had to take off one wig to try on another).I decided to buy the wig but I was told it was not returnable yet one other point I like about Vermont Goodwill's you have 7 days to return your merchandise.Again I had to think about it but its hard to find wigs so I took the chance. When I got home I looked on-line again for this wig with no luck except for 1 that cost 19.99.I began to brush out this wig and the hair that came out was like having a cheap barbie instead of the real thing $50 may not seem like alot to the Goodwill but its alot to me I have many medical bills right now.I did call and tryed to explain this to the Ocala Store and I was told no exceptions all I asked was for a discounted price this wig is not worth $50 talk about ripping the public off I hope it gets me threw a couple more months and then I can just throw it away!!Also after investagating this wig even further I found the site that this wig came from a cheap organasation called Haz Beauty this is so dissapointing for me please advise your employee's to look there items up correctly this wig should have been priced 9.99 and I paid 50.00 so very sad.
I have to agree with most of the comments posted here. I donate quite a bit of merchandise to Goodwill to help out those that need it, and I'm treated very well on the donation side of the business. The unfortunate thing for me is I picked Goodwill over other charities due to their professional handling of donations, and I really hate the fact that things are priced so high when people need the price break the most. If I could get away with it, I would sit in the parking lot and give the clothes to people that needed them directly. To anyone from Goodwill who might actually take time to read these comments, don't people deserve a break when they are struggling? And a suggestion to anybody who needs clothes, household items, appliances, etc. - before shopping at Goodwill, take a Saturday and visit some yard sales in your area instead. You'll buy things for less money and directly help the people that need it the most - that's the original intent of Goodwill and other thrift stores before the outrageous price hikes. The merchandise is DONATED, so even if expenses rise there is no excuse for this practice. I'm sorry for the long post, but maybe it will make Goodwill think.
This is not the loction of the corporate offices for Goodwill industreis of Eastern NC. It is a store location. The number for the corporate office is 919-941-9600.
I'm not sure about the rating. Is it a good thing or a bad thing that today we found a very special painting in a Florida store. It was done by her mother, and was one of many stolen in Maryland nearly 5 years ago. Forty bucks for a priceless (only to us) painting.........we are thankfull for it's return.
No super saturday anymore? Ridiculous! I am in baltimore maryland, I refuse to spend all day on saturdays looking for colored tags with crowds of others, I will find other stores to shop unless them last saturday of them month sale comes back. Everyone is talking, this will be the end of goodwill.
Stopping at the Goodwill in Culver Ciry, CA - I LAUGHED OUT LOUD when I saw a common bestseller paperback book (Barbara Kingsolver 'The Lacuna') priced at 9.99. The SAME paperback is selling NEW at amazon for less than that. Goodwill really needs to reassess the outrageous price increases in light of the economic downturn and continuing recession.
Goodwill in st.Petersburg fl on gandy they are over price and the workers take all the good stuff for them self the other day I saw a lady with red hair that works there, put some stuff in her car ,so I told the manger the manger said it's ok she works here , so I was telling the manger so if somebody works here they can get stuff and the people who don't got job have to pay.
The prices are to high. It's also insulting to not be a senior citizen and get asked if you are. The young employees in the Marysville, WA store make it point to ask people in their 40's and young 50's if they are seniors so they can receive the discount for 62 and older. Come on it says on the loud speaker 10 times an hour if you are a senior citizen 62 and older please let your cashier know. We'd rather they keep their discount then make us feel older then we are. Not going back.
If I could rate the Roseburg, OR store a zero I would. I visited the store this afternoon and there is an openly pompous, condescending attitude with the Clerk (chatting personal stuff with a friend while at the cash register while I waited and waited in plain view to get help). Goodwill is a business and not the snotty employee's living room, so do better at customer service and appreciation. Trying to compete, pricewise, with Macy's does a dis-service to your communities as well.
Dear Goodwill stores, You have turned into a greedy corporation and lost your main purpose of helping people. I wonder if you are letting the mentally disabled price your stuff or what? Most of the used things I see in your stores cost more then buying them brand new. Goodwill use to be a great place that helped middle class Americans out! Now you try to ROB THEM BLIND! I find myself going to other thrift stores in the area now because not only did your prices increase but several people I know who have criminal records were turned down. You refused to help them. Yet your company proclaims to be a great advocate for rehabilitation and working with ex-offenders to reintragrate them back into society. You are liars! One of the people I know came to you and had committed that crime 18 years ago and is now disabled. I work within the justice system and can see crime from a mile away. Your buisness practices are shameful. Your helping no one but yourselves. If you truely want to help people, lower your prices nationwide and really try to practice what you preach!
I used to shop at five stores on my side of town until today. And they were all within a about a five mile radius of my home and each other. loved it . Not now. Salvation Army will get my buisness about five times a week, which is what my friends and I did at Goodwill. Very seldom do I have a return and today after work I went for a refund on my purchase and was told they only put it on a gift card to be used in the stores. How dare they tell me where to spend my money. I won't buy from any where that wants to send you a rebate used only in their stores. No way and the word will get out. I don't even shop at Target stores because of all their antics nor do I visit the Value Villages, their no returns at all. And ck this out, there's a goodwill in Fishers,In and guess where the handicap parking is , nope not in the front roll where others who are able to walk, but you have to cross the isle and hope you don't get hit. Yep the second row. I know because im handicapped, my daughter is very livid and turning that it in to AWD. I can handle the prices that went up, but this is it. Good by
THEY GET THIS STUFF FOR NOTHING. Over the years, our family has donated thousands of dollars worth of goods to GOODWILL. Now that the economy is stressed and more of us people are shopping at GOODWILL, the are spiking prices, exploiting the situation and profiting from our loss. In other words, GOODWILL is taking advantage of a bad situation. They should be doing just the opposite and should be renamed BADWILL!!!
