Leavenworth KOA: if you stay there do NOT stay in the area called the "Meadow". The owners daughter has a mobile permanently there and she has a poodle who is chained up outside and it barks all night long. Complaining did no good, and our information is that others in the past have complained and nothing has been done.

The KO"A-mazing" their moniker not mine was horrible. One star is way to generous for this campground. The manager is so "amazed" with himself he can't see what the problems are. My family was there last weekend. What a nightmare this place is. The management doesn't have a clue how to run the place and is not taking any accountability for the staff he has hired. If you are handicapped this is not the place for you. In fact the help "Charlotte" in particular may even yell at you! I was near the office one afternoon and as someone was exiting the office I overheard her snapping at a young girl who asked her what the date was. Really? Barking at your youngest campers? She was filling out your paperwork to check out badminton rackets and you yell at her because she asks you what the date is? What is sad is that the management was told the day before how this same woman offended others. His excuse was "well that's her husband they have that kind of relationship." So you hire a couple to work in your office REPRESENTING KOA who can't treat each other with respect while your PAYING campers are in the same room?! SHAME ON YOU! And they are boasting that they got the Presidents Award!! The staff was so rude on so many occassions in 24hours we decided to leave early! We will never go to this facility again!

We recently had the pleasure of spending the night at the Checotah/Lake Eufaula KOA in Checotah, Oklahoma. This is one fine campground, and if there is a prize for KOA of the year, this one should win, hands down! The campground is uniquely landscaped with touches of whimsy tucked here and there. The pool was beautiful and everything was well maintained. There’s a nice restaurant on site so you can relax and have a delicious meal. The bathrooms are fabulous! Beautiful wall paper, wood framed mirrors over the four home quality sinks and fixtures, terry cloth hand towels, complimentary body and hair shampoo dispensers in the showers--we felt right at home. But these amenities were not what made our stay so special; it was the staff at Checotah KOA. In addition to making us feel welcome at check in, they bent over backwards to help us out when our air conditioner suddenly quit working (at 110 degrees!). They helped us secure an on site repair service and offered to help us with alternative shelter for the night if our unit could not be repaired that day. Fortunately, we were able to get the air conditioner to function again and spent a comfortable, quiet night. We were actually sorry to have to leave the next day--there was so much more of the campground to see including the lake, walking trail, barnyard zoo and more. Thank you, Checotah KOA. We will be back!

I am a property owner, disabled with Multiple Sclerosis, and share a full lot line with KOA in Shingletown, CA. This week they began moving a failed septic system right next to my land with huge leach lines above an area too near for comfort to my well. This camp has only 12 acres yet thru the years has grown to 52 sights and cabins with full waste disposal from Hwy 44. I firmly believe this is immoral as no system that huge should be purposely built so close to home owners. Mt Lassen has the best well water in the USA. This camp owner's greed to make more money is pathetic. 10 more sights are planned to soon be built. I am sure 'deep pockets' with the contractor and the County of Shasta have 'looked the other way' as this behemouth sight has grown. I will openly protest to the best of my ability......legally! Living in Shingletown and wading in KOA's crap! Disgusting! Horrible business man ruining a once decent camping spot.

If you are planning on stopping in Middlebury, IN at KOA keep going. We are big KOA campers and are not bashing all KOA's. However we were finishing a 3,000 mile trip and letting our 3 children wind down from a 12 hour drive. Arrived in Middlebury with store hours posted 9am to 9pm, and store was closed at 7pm for meeting. We were put in a 40 foot lot when were were in a 34 foot trailer with a 21 foot truck. Our campsite barely allowed for us to put out our awning due to the cramped space and fire pit so close to the camper. Also they failed to inform us and other campers the Rec Hall, which contained the game room was unavailable to campers due to being to booked to 100 other people. Our kids decided to swim and one hour after swimming the health department showed up to inspect the pool. The health department shut down the pool for the entire day. When I asked to speak to the owner, I was told they were not on site. There was no one there in charge exept for the owners 20 year old son. After being told by another employee we wanted to speak to him he drove by our camp site three times and did not even speak to us. I had to physically step in front of his tractor, at that time he said he was busy grating the drive and had other work to do. Very poor customer service and management. Worst trip in a KOA ever. We were not offered compensation for services being unavaliable, there was nothing for our kids to do. Had to give one star rating however if it was up to me they would recieve a big fat "0". Had to return home one day early. On the other hand Cape Cod, Cooperstown & Niagra Falls NY & Saco Maine were exceptionally wonderful KOA's and my family would highly recommend them. Brian from Illinois

7/29/30 Dear Mary Jo, We cancelled our reservation within 48 hours which is standard KOA policy. We will fight this egregious behavior any way we can Mary Jo Nelson. When you double your prices for an event and then hold members hostage by saying the reservation is non-refundable, that is not good policy, no matter what you have talked yourself into. If you call ripping off guests treating people well, then you had better look into the mirror. We were absolutely NOT aware that there was no refund, that I assure you Ms. Nelson. We would expect a cancellation fee as is typical, like 10 dollars, but NOT 71 dollars which is 7 times the normal fee. That fee is a rip off, especially when you told Gloria that our spot was the last spot. You would be able to easily fill that spot 48 hours in advance. Also we didn’t see anything in writing about the non-cancellation policy. Mary Jo we will use all means available to us, including the Better Business Bureau, sending a copy of this e-mail to the corporate office in Billings, as I did yesterday, and disputing these charges with the CC company which is already in the making. I will be calling the corporate office again in complaint and will visit the KOA office in Billings in person when we get home. One way or the other there WILL be resolution to this issue. I will put my complaint on the KOA blog site also for others to view. Thank you for taking the time to respond. From: Cheyenne KOA [mailto:cheyennekoa@gmail.com] Sent: Thursday, July 29, 2010 7:57 PM To: Dr. Thomas Donahue Subject: Re: Gloria Sturgis-Donahue Reservation I am responding to your objection to our Cheyenne Frontier Days cancellation policy. I (Mary Jo Nelson) am the owner of the Cheyenne KOA. I took your wife’s reservation. I explained to her that our rates double during Frontier Days and that once she made the reservation I explained to her that the deposit was non-refundable! Our goal is to treat ALL of our guests well. This policy guaranteed her our best available site during an extraordinarily busy time. When she canceled she was fully aware that there would be no refund of her deposit. Our special cancellation policy during Frontier Days is well established and certainly is within keeping with established KOA policy. Researching KOA Northwest Chicago. Based on the numerous comments on the internet it appears the owner would not qualify to stay at the camp ground. The following has been taken from the KOA reservation web sight including the misspelling of the word aggressive: The following dog breeds are not allowed: Pit Bull, Doberman, Chow, Rottweiler, Alaskan Malamute, Wolf mixes or any mix of these breeds. Service dogs of any breed are welcome (papers required) however they must follow the leash restraint policies and may not exhibit aggresive behavior. The owner exhibits aggressive behavior. This is ironic.

A response to the NW Chicago KOA has been received. It does not say much. Thank you for your email regarding the Chicago NorthWest KOA Kampground and for taking the time to share your concerns with us. I have also spoke with your son as he is also concerned about the rude customer service that your family received. Please know that we at the KOA Home offices and the managers of each independently owned campground care very much about your experience. We'll be sure to pass along your concerns to the KOA home office management and the management at the Chicago NorthWest KOA. Once again, thank you for sharing your concerns with us. I wish you much happy camping in the future. Sincerely, The KOA Value Kard Rewards Team

Update: KOA Northwest Chicago. It is now 8 days since the KOA experience in Union, Illinois. KOA Corporate was notified immediately, within 15 minutes of the confrontation with the KOA Park owner via a phone call. My son was interviewed at length about the incident by corporate. Corporate was to contact the park owner. So far there has been no follow up contact with this writer nor a refund for the night we did not stay in the KOA. The negative comments out weigh the positive. Very few people take the time to express opinions. It would be interesting to see input for this and other camp grounds. I put thousands of miles a year on a motor home. I guess a shocking experience is to be expected now and then. I rate this a Zero Star Camp Ground.

All I can say is that based on what I have read that and what I have experienced myself, KOA has no interest in customer service as a corportation. We experienced humiliation and trauma from a KOA manager at a KOA in Michigan for not following a rule that was never stated and burried in their web site...we too had to leave and had to spend extra money. Days later no apology, no refund, nothing. My child has been truamatized. KOA if I could give you negative stars I would, you are interested in making money and that is it!! Dignatiy and customer service? I don't think anyone associated with a KOA knows what it is. We were treated so badly I cannot even set foot in the city we were staying in!!! I will be telling every one I know NEVER NEVER to stay at any KOA!

KOA NW Chicago. The owner of this campground continues to refuse to refund the money he is holding of mine for the night of July 5th 2010. If you are considering camping here or for that matter anywhere, do your internet research for comments about location and treatment. The KOA in Union, Illinois has a disproportionate number of negative comments about treatment. The owners are rude, the staff is caustic. Maybe not the entire staff but those encountered by this writer were. I have been camping for many years and endured much in life. This event is by far one of the most bizarre I have I encountered.

KOA Northwest Chicago, Union, Illinois Southern Hostility Not Hospitality Please advise how I can return the gate device to you to receive a refund of the $10.00 cash you collected as a deposit on Friday July 2, 2010 at 9:50 PM CDT. Also, please refund the charge for the night of July 5th 2010 for our camp sight. You created a situation that was totally unacceptable as a campground owner. It was in my best interest to vacate the premises since you were in a very combative posture. You were aware of the fact that my son had picked my wife and I and our Boston Terrier up on Saturday morning to be taken to Chicago. When I spoke to your office I indicated my son would be coming to pick us up. Your staff indicated there were to be no guests on a holiday weekend. I stated he was not a guest. He was coming from Chicago to pick us up after we drove north from Florida. I was advised he would have to stop at your office upon arrival. I indicated we had a number of things we needed to load in his car and I would like him to be able to drive to our campsite for loading. Not an unreasonable request. He arrived and he checked in as he was advised and was told he would have to take a golf cart ride to the site. He questioned why. He was told by your employee that he was just a worker, he did not make the rules. “See this yellow shirt. I am a worker bee. The water is up to here right now (indicating the KOA boat in Union, Il was about to sink.) You do not mess with the Queen Bee.” We loaded the items on the cart and they were taken to his vehicle. The emphasis by the KOA was this was a holiday weekend. We returned to your KOA at approximately 4 pm on Monday July 5th,2010. I had the rented gate device in my possession. Logically we would be returning to our Road Trek in your camp ground. We entered thru the gate using the pass device. The same 3 people who left on Saturday morning. The same dog, the same vehicle. You were sitting in your golf cart as we passed you just beyond the gate. There was a 2nd golf cart and operator with you. We drove slowly to the camp site obeying the posted speed limit. The holiday weekend had ended. The majority of the campsites were now unoccupied. The vehicle we were in was parked just in front of our Road Trek in our designated camp site for unloading so my son could drive the 50 miles plus back to Chicago. You pulled up behind us. It was not evident you were the owner. You were unshaven and rude. You immediately took off on us about driving in. “You then went on to state to me you had to push it. “ You had to push it.” You then stated “ You are the Vietnam Veteran who was looking for a discount” You pushed and pushed and pushed stating we did not follow the rules” We said we were unloading the vehicle. We did unload the vehicle. You were intent on creating a situation that would result in us leaving. I also believe you were pushing for a physical confrontation. I asked where the southern hospitality was that was stated on your web site. It was not evident. I also stated my son found numerous negative comments about the KOA in Union, IL on the internet and questioned why I had picked that one. I stated that I had stayed at a number of them over the years with outstanding results including West of Des Moines, Iowa, California, Mt Dessert Island, Me, Virginia Beach, VA. Etc. This franchise holder is a determent to the KOA name. KOA has stood for consistency of treatment of the Camper. This location is not representative of the image KOA portrays. There is much competition out there and with the economic times being what they are one would think an owner would be interested in building good will not destroying it. This KOA is for sale for $1,600.000 plus. The new owners, should there be any, will have to do some heavy lifting to rehabilitate this location. A location I do not feel is fitting to continue with the KOA name. Or is it possible the owner is pushing to disenfranchise with KOA and is intentionally acting as he (they) do and creating ill will? My wife was hysterically crying in the front seat of our motor home as the confrontation was nearing a conclusion. A conclusion that Mr. Teague was pushing to the point of seeking physical contact.

Interestingly, I too, just left the Cape Hatteras KOA and had a really bad experience with the staff, including the manager, Tom. My husband, daughter and I traveled the entire North Carolina coast over a 10 day period, starting below Wilmington. I made reservations with "Pat" (from IOWA or IDAHO), anyway she was quite rude on the phone and couldn't help at all with routes or anything like that because she wasn't from the area (didn't ask anyone else either)....anyway, I reserved June 28, 29, 30 for a tent site but need electrical and water. I placed a "hold" on Thursday night, July 1st. Since I was unfamilar with area, I wasn't sure how long it would take to get there. Early Monday, (June 28), I called and cancelled for that evening and reserved Thursday, the 1st. I spoke with Regina, who in the middle of our conversation, set the phone down and I could hear a lot of commotion in the back ground. She returned to the phone, telling me that an old friend had just walked in; a former employee because everybody was yelling, etc. I arrived, set up camp and the first two days were fine (yes the washing machines were broken). On Thursday, we went to the light house. When we returned: Several people including TOM, the manager WERE TAKING DOWN OUR TENT!!!! He was rude and said that check out was at noon. I told him there must have been a mistake, but he wouldn't even talk to us. He told me to see "Jackie". A huge RV was parked in our site. We had to move and since I didn't want to go to the trouble of setting up the tent again, we moved to a cabin....AT OUR EXPENSE!!!! Regina did not reserve Thursday and since I didn't pay attention to the dates...I had been on the road for ten days and thought in terms of days not dates.....I was the one who had to move. And that would have been ok if not for the attitude of the manager and for the fact that they were actually MOVING MY TENT. I agree with the above comments in that they were RUDE. I have NEVER been treated like that either. They made the mistake. The KOA had attempted to call me, but ATT phone service is not good on the island, so I didn't get the messages until we go to Roanoke Island and you would not beleive the UGLY MESSAGES THAT TOM, THE MANAGER, PUT ON MY VOICEMAIL. That was before he knew any of the facts. I will be blogging everything and everyone about this situation. I still can't believe they charged me 100 to stay in the cabin after they screwed up the reservations and treated me so badly.

We spent 6 days at KOA in Cherokee. First time ever camping. It was the most enjoyable experience I have ever had. Arrived on Monday June 28, 2010 and left July 4th. There were 12 of us there for most of the time. The Grandkids had fun, also the grown kids had fun rafting, making freedom bracelets, also the tied dyed shirts were alot of fun. Thanks so much for having an enjoyable KOA Kampground. Special Thanks to Pat who works in the store area for all your help.

We recently stayed at the Cape Hatteras KOA in NC[6/20-6/27] and we had a motor home problem with an air pressure leak.We asked the staff for help with names of RV repair service and they gave us one name and he refused to work on a Sat. So I went to the office asked some one else for assistance with no results. Then I asked to look in the phone book and started calling places.ABC Towing and Repair promised to come but never showed up so we had to stay another night and take our son and wife to Virginia Beach to rent a car to drive back to PA because of job etc..Finally, Sunday afternoon ,we got help from Seto's Service Center from Kitty Hawk.He said "Why didn't you call me yesterday,I would've had you on the road yesterday!"We said that the KOA staff did not give us his name.He responded tha he is frequently at the KOA for Good Sam members. Then when we were being fixed we had to move our disabled RV because the folks coming in were having a fit! We have been going to this KOA yearly and sometimes multiple times and have NEVER been treated so rudely.NO one cared!! I know that we were not the first to have RV trouble. We plan to cancel our reservations for next year and find another campground. Also one of two clothes dryer was broken at the busiest time of year and the trash can going to the beach was full and trash was lying around it.Plus the pool cafe has very limited hours of operation.I could go on and on but I won't.This KOA has gone to the dogs and it breaks my heart. We have a KOA membership but the savings did not compensate for our frustration.Where is common courtesy? Where are the people skills to explain to the new arrivals that we were being repaired and would move our motor home ASAP.

In June, 2010, we spent 3 weeks in Eastern Canada staying in KOA Kampgrounds whenever possible. I would like to single out two of these that provided superior support for us. I would rate these 5 Stars. They were KOA East Thunder Bay, ON, and KOA Brighton, ON. Both of these Kamps went out of their way to provide us with little things that make our trip that more enjoyable. Sincerely, Richard Hartman rbhartman_64@yahoo.com
