Corporate Greed

I remember the days when Goodwill Thrift was a great place to shop. For at least 8 or so years now, I've watched the prices skyrocket. Your prices are ridiculously high. For used donated items you are charging almost new prices. Come on now corporate! Your greed is deplorable. It's obvious you are fattening your wallets. I used to donate a lot of items (as well as purchase a lot) from your various stores. No more. Goodwill is a ripoff!

Discounts for disabled

There are many disabled whom cannot work and I do not understand why a company dedicated to help those that are disabled a discount when purchasing from there store. Disappointed.

Goodwill has lost it's way

Goodwill receives most of their items for free. Those items aren't in the best condition and should be priced affordably - such as $1 per shirt, $2 per pair of jeans, etc.. However prices are much higher and everywhere I see Goodwill building shiny new stores. I see this as greed. Therefore I no longer donate to Goodwill and I don't shop there either - there are 2nd hand stores that sell at half the prices of Goodwill. It is unfortunate that Goodwill has lost it's way. :(

Outrageous Prices at Oxford, MS Goodwill

I live in the small college town of Oxford, Ms. While the town boasts a facade of affluence - due largely to the student population and out-of-town football fans who have second homes here - the fact is that we are still a poor county in an even poorer state. I imagine that the above mentioned reasons are why Oxford's Goodwill prices continue to climb at an alarming and unfair rate. I am disappointed that an organization that claims to do good works would price gouge, especially since the store is mostly full of cheaply-made Wal-Mart brand items that could be purchased new for just a few dollars more.

The new store in Mayodan North Carolina has outragious prices ... A foot locker at the Stoneville North Carolina sold for $8.99 ... the one at the Mayodan store is priced at $29.99 the one at the Stoneville store was in better shape than the one in Mayodan. This is just one item everything is over priced... They have higher prices of new items ..... also the workers are unfriendly and complain about their job. Someone from corporate really needs to check out this store and make changes. It is ashame that items are given to the stores and they sale them for out ragious prices

I have purchased a purse at 2 different goodwills in tacoma about blocks away from each other. I purchased a kathy van zeeland purse for $7.99 and realized that it wasnt leather and that the handles were comming off the purse. So i returned it to the other goodwill for store credit. No problem but then I returned to the same goodwill a few days later and saw that purse in their glass display case with a new tag on it with $29.99. I saw that and was like wtf. I talked to the manager who said ot was about education and i told her its pretty imbarising and that was a crazy prize for a damaged purse. I also told her that those purses dont sell for more than 25 new on ebay. They also sell counterfit used purses for over 100 dollars. I told them thats a felony if caught because you cant sell counterfit purses. Completely illegal.

i worked for goodwill industries for 34 days its like the sheltered workshop at 4009 west wendover avenue its a big warehouse vietanmese sheltered sweatshop is all at is goodwill industries had on the bulletin board industrial services they are both run by guilford county taxpayer supported money state and federal tax money as well i read that more than $175,000,00 in federal goes to support these illegal sheltered sweatshops to goodwill industries shame on you for telling lies that 87 cents of every dollar goes to help the unfortunate to train them to find a job that is a lie you are nothing but greedy lying self centered hypocrites i dont like the way you treat the disabled and non disabled workers morons that is what you are theieves liars and jerks

I have shopped several goodwill in shreveport and bossier city Louisiana. Their merchandise is awful. Fifty percent needs to be trashed. Appliances not working and can not be returned . You would think with all the employee the merchandise would be in some type of order. The prices are over the top for used items. Some people are unaware that some of this merchandise can be purchased new for this cost. Where is all the merchandise we donate to goodwell go. Surely not in their stores

Your shipping & handling rates are outrageous, downright robbery. $14.78 for one book..!!! USPS media mail is only $2.75-$3.50. Thievery same on you.

I go to the goodwill store in maysville, ky. biweekly to check out the furniture. I'm not sure who prices things or its priced by corporate office. I found a used slighty scratched entertainment center It was $72.00 and a futon frame only was $52.00. I also go to the Paris, Ky. store and there furniture is $10.00 to $15.00 I thought your organization was to help our needy families. Also I don't understand why two Goodwill a hour away has such a price difference.

I have been there less than a year, and have the same questions about the company’s policies and values, that many of you have voiced here. The first thing that I noticed was the very low morale of all of my fellow employees, and suggested that the management become involved in ways to encourage and motivate more positive attitudes. Customers frequently tell me that my cheerful and caring work ethic is appreciated and surprising, compared to the rude and angry treatment that they have become accustomed to from previous and still current employees of Goodwill. I have witnessed customers get angry over the high prices of our merchandise, and I personally strongly agree with them, as do most of the employees. In fact, many of your comments accuse us the employees of stealing or getting to have first dibbs on the donated items. The reality is we cannot even afford to shop there with a 25% discount, and a bi-weekly paycheck that does not even cover the cost of living. As for theft, there are at least 30 surveillance cameras focused mainly on employees, not the public, which the video is displayed at all times for managers to watch us. The majority, if not all of my coworkers depend on some type of government support to supplement the low pay. This is why moral is so low, and not one of us would be opposed to lower prices to help customers that we are also in the same situation as.

. When I approached my managers about some type of incentive for our stores employees, to help boost positive feelings about our company, all of my ideas were rejected. These ideas were as simple as putting aside a few small inexpensive donated items, as simple as a used dvd for us to choose from, to new jewelry that costs $1.99, to show appreciation or recognition for going above and beyond to be more courteous. There was no way that Goodwill was going to risk any financial loss for the benefit of its employees, so that maybe they would want to treat customers better. Overall, they don't care to improve the store, unless it increases revenue. The most that I could get them to do was agree to a monthly newsletter that recognized our employee’s hard work, by competition. It was a start to the ideas I had suggested, such as inspiration, appreciation, acknowledgment of examples of a good work ethic by an employee. Coworkers, thanking each other for coming together and supporting each other, I even suggested adding jokes or any humor that could crack a smile.

I began to question what happened to the vision that Goodwill once was when in 1902 it was started by a Methodist minister who would take used items that needed mending and allow the poor to take on the task so that they would then own the used good that they themselves repaired. I asked my superiors why prices were so high when we had been blessed with these items for free. The poor aren't benefiting from shopping or working for this company. I questioned what is so GOOD about Goodwill. I was informed that Goodwill's mission is not to accept used donations to resell at affordable prices to the less fortunate, but to provide jobs to people with barriers to employment. WHAT???? I had heard this repetitively over the ads played on the ridiculous Goodwill Radio, which is played every day, with the playlist always containing the same songs. Oh, I guess they are speaking of the disabled employees that are paid an inhumane hourly wage of around $2. I thought about it and could not name one disabled employee in our store or any of the other retail Goodwill stores that I have been in. They also claim that they have vocational training, resume building classes, and job placement programs. However, anytime that a person comes in asking about employment, they are told to go online to the Goodwill website. HELLO!!! Not everyone can afford a computer or the internet, so why don't we have someone in each store to provide the resources we claim to be built upon, in order to be a non-profit organization?? Why, don't my fellow uneducated and older coworkers have paid days to train for a better paying position? I am just as baffled as the customers. We also auction the more expensive donated items in store and online. How many of you wealthier people have donated those things with the idea of someone less fortunate getting to enjoy purchasing these items for a low cost?

Our charitable organizations are not visible to me as an employee. I only have found through research the words charitable organizations, no distinction, such as St.Judes Children’s Hospital, or the battered women's shelter. We encourage people to donate during the holiday season, not so that we can do the right thing, which in my mind would be to donate some of our received items to the toy drives, or to sponsor our own angel trees, and fill those children's Christmas wishes with items from our store. Goodwill, give and not take for once. Does anyone else question these things? We also offer a large banquet hall for RENT for corporate parties, and other occasions. Why is it not used for at least a portion of the year to provide shelter or meals for the homeless? Why not have a week of free job skill classes open to the public? Has anyone ever seen Goodwill do anything good for your community, such as sponsor a little league team, or the Special Olympics, anything? As far as Goodwill being praised for recycling, that is the nice way to inform you that they send the items they are unable to sell in retail or online, are sent to third world countries and sold there. So, maybe instead of accusing the employees of stealing or keeping the more valuable items to themselves, maybe you should start spreading awareness to your community about donating to a more caring organization, question the corporation and demand answers. You have the right to stop donating and shopping at this company, and maybe together we can make an impact large enough to force change. Contact your local churches, or congressman. I am writing this to inform you that you are not wrong to be angry. I am also angry, and this is my first step in trying to help make a change. This company is making on average 4 billion a year, and some of the money comes from the government. This money is greedily being kept from the employees that make Goodwill possible, and most importantly from the programs that it bases its reputation on. Don't waste your time voicing your opinion on a website that is not even affiliated with the company and will never reach them to gain attention. Go out into the communities and start demanding their attention. Without you, the ones that donate the merchandise, without you the customer purchasing their merchandise, they will have no revenue. Which in the end, you will see that you have the power to force Goodwill Industries Corporate executives to remember who has allowed them to bring home those six figure salaries. That person is YOU!

I would like to start out by saying that I can fully understand each of your individual concerns about Goodwill Industries moral standards as a non-profit organization. I am a current employee with the company and witness firsthand the greed and lack of any "goodwill" being practiced, not only to customers, but also to the employees. I am an educated, young single female struggling financially to make ends meet just as many middle and lower class Americans are today in this harsh economy. I feel that I am overqualified for the position that I currently fill, however I am just one of thousands of young college graduates that are forced to take any job available. Please do not misunderstand why I feel that information is important, I do not feel that I am better than any class of society, as I was raised near poverty level, and still remain. I along with my coworkers receive the legal minimum wage of $7.25 hourly as an employee of this billion dollar a year non-profit organization. Even though the pay is low, I tried to find comfort in the thought that I worked for a company that was helping people, this helped me to stay positive for the first few months of my employment.

To Whom it May Concern. On Tuesday June 26th I was shopping in your store on Taft Street in Hollywood FL. and I saw a toy truck that a small child could drive. I was told that they did not know whether it was working or not because it had no power cord. It was battery powered and so I called my husband and asked if we should buy it for our grandson. The price was $30.00. I asked the store manager Emily TWICE if the item could be returned if it didn't work and she said Yes, no problem. That we had 7 days to return it. Also that if questioned about the return we should ask for her. The truck was missing the charger cord for the battery but I thought that would be ok, i could probably find one on EBay for very little money. So we took it home and found that the floor was broken out of it, probably by big kids standing in it. This is a toy made for a 2 or 3 year old child. When we got it home my husband tried to charge the battery and he found that it would not hold a charge. So with no charger cord, a useless battery and the dangerous broken floor this piece was nothing more than junk. The cord and battery could be replaced but the broken plastic floor could not be repaired and would be dangerous for a child since thing moves at 3.5 mph (when working.) So.. we took it back to the store and Emily was not there. When I said that I would like my money back I was told that no refunds were given, only store credits. Now.. AT NO TIME before I purchased this truck was I told that I could only return it for store credit. My husband and I live on Social Security, so if we had been told that we could not get our money refunded we would NOT have taken the chance on a broken (and dangerous) toy. The girl at the register called Emily on the phone and she confirmed to me that the policy was not to give refunds but only store credit. She also tried to tell me that she did in fact tell me that the item would only be returned for store credit. I put a stop to that line of defense immediately. She said that she would call her supervisor whose name I wrote down but cannot find at this moment, and find out if there was anything that she could do. I believe she said his name was Sinclaire. Emily called me back about 10 minutes later, We left as my husband and I had to attend a meeting so couldn't wait for the final decision we left the broken truck in the store as it was too big to keep dragging around. Anyway, when she called back she told me that her supervisor said no refund. So it's just tough luck for my husband and I who had been tricked out of $30. by a place that we thought had a good reputation. Now we know better. Say anything to get the customer to leave their money in the store. While I'm at it I'll mention something else. In the middle of the store stands a chest of drawers. When I asked Emily how much it was she said that it wasn't for sale, that it was a "merchandising piece" She went on to say that if she told me how much her supervisor told her to charge for it that I wouldn't want to buy it anyway. I don't know how she knew that. because she would not tell me what that number was. SO is the piece a merchandising piece or was it just so expensive that Emily deemed that I would not want to buy it? Is this any way to operate honestly? Is this how little you think of your good name? Furthermore the prices that they charge are not in line with a charitable organization. You call yourselves non profit and charitable but there is a store in every neighborhood and where are the training centers? I also see from the complaints that you are paying sub minimum wages to your staff. When you pay sub minimum wages you get sub minimum staff who steal and trick customers. I have accepted that we will not get our $30 back so you must accept that this experience has besmirched your good name. Shame on you. I will also be reporting you to the IRS and any other place that I can find to report this behavior. And I'm retired so I have plenty of time to find out who they are and will post it here so that others may report formal complaints to overseeing agencies as well.

I enjoy shopgoodwill, but I believe the prices charged for shipping are way out of line. I expect to be charged more for large and heavy items but to pay 10.00 to 12.00 or more plus handling fees to ship a ring that weighs less than 2 grams is highway robbery. If it continues, I will be forced to find another bidding site.

They just raised their prices...it costs $5.00 for a pair of pants and $5.00 for a shirt. The bad part is this is a very poor town. All factories closed!! There is no jobs at all. Can't you give the poor people a break. This is highway robbery. I will NEVER shop there again...nor my relatives too. By the way I am related to most of the people in this small town. Whan is the name of my town?? Columbia, Kentucky

I and alot of my friends frequent the store in Salisbury Md store #5235. Our question is the books although the price for books is some what reasonable for used books, the cost varies too much. The sign states hard back books one price and paper books $.50 but when you check out sometimes there all $.50 sometimes you are told if their romance novels ONLY in paper back they are $.50 all others are $1.50, then sometimes you are told even by the manager that it depends on the size of the paper back book, and how stiff the cover is GIVE ME A BREAK!!!!!!!!!!!! they should have ALL HARDBACK BOOKS ONE PRICE AND ALL SOFT BACK BOOKS(NOT HARD COVER) a different price. If you don't care to do it this way divide the books into separate areas according to price and QUIT PLAYING THE SHELL GAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the goodwill stores here in Jacksonville,Florida prices have more than doubled and in some cases tripled within the last 12 months. the service and merchandise has went down and prices keep rising, when i asked a store clerk why $$$$ was going up so fast her response was we are tired of u people making money off of us. needless to say goodwill has opened up a high end store in pondre vedre beach (rich area) called the "THE BLUE BOUTIQUE". WTF get ur act together, remember why u were founded. Strongly suggest people look into goodwill policies before donating to them in the future
