Fitness USA is a f***ing joke period.

A martial arts dojo can be inimiidattng. People, young and less young, are afraid of looking silly while learning something new. I've seen children, and I've seen grown men and women, all but tiptoe the first time they enter a dojo. What's impressive about USA Karate is how many of these kids, men, women, teens, and families, tiptoe in the first time, and stay for years. I think that's the best measure of a martial arts dojo the number of members who stay beyond the initial excitement, beyond the phase of I'm going to be able to kick butt/defend myself/look like Bruce Lee/impress my friends with my black belt. Why do so many students continue at USA Karate for years? In part, because head instructor Joni Wilson Sharrah, has won international medals in sport karate, attained the rank of 7th-degree black belt, and attained the title of Shihan (master instructor). But mostly because Shihan Joni brings a combination of passion and compassion that's rare in any field of instruction, especially martial arts. One moment, I'll be watching Shihan Joni demonstrate the form that brought her rank and medals; minutes later, I'll see her bend down to instruct a six-year-old who just joined the dojo. Shihan Joni is as dedicated to beginners as she is to black belts. She'll expend as much effort with someone who's struggling as she does with medal-winners. I've never seen Shihan Joni give up on anyone, and I think that she deeply believes that anyone, given sufficient effort, can excel. Shihan Joni has passed her dedication to instructors who lead or assist in many of the classes. My favorite aspect of USA Karate is that teenaged senior students, who have shown dedication, maturity, and qualities of leadership, are given the opportunity to work at the dojo and become assistant instructors. I think this is a superior experience to most other part-time jobs available to young people. At USA Karate, you or your children will get in shape, learn discipline, self defense, enjoy the friendly setting and, best of all, have the satisfaction of getting good at a compelling physical art.

this place is a dump they are folding just a matter of time

This company does not at all care about its members. As an ex employee there and I can back that up what full sincerity. 4 locations closed down within a half and half; domino effect. If your GOING TO GO BANKRUPT and close all locations, let it happen already, quit stringing your employees and members along. No paid holidays, garbage insurance, "vice president" treats you like your a dog, sell memberships with the same equipment from 1970, cleans pool once a year, bugs in sauna, ants and mic run around and nothing is done about it, employees who've been there for over 20+ years r chewed up and spit out without any retirement package. Overall the gym is built off greed and William F Hubner is the owner and I worked there for four years and never met him once!! Be a man Huber, quit robbing these people, if your going to close, do it!

Had a very difficult experience with USA Fitness Center in Sepulveda Center in CA, inconsistent data in their computer and my contract. Very easy to join but very difficult to cancel membership. In my opinion, their policies are all about making money for them and not for their members. I don't recommend this entity to anyone.

They promised lots of new classes with more variety if we paid $88.00 to upgrade. Well, they now say you cannot take the classes you want and they will not get a sub when instructors are gone a long time. Pretty lousy service for an upgrade payment. If you don't pay, then they keep you out of the classes and you can work on the equipment but that is not why I joined in the 1st place.

THIS GYM IS RAN BY THE BEST MAN IN THE BUSINESS ... I WORK ON MY KNEES THERE FOR YEARS ...I WILLC

This company is closing its doors very strategically. It is trying to avoid as many lawsuits as possible. Please don't sign up or buy personal training. Once they close the doors you will be out of all your money.. DON'T LET THIS PLACE SUCKER YOU INTO THERE BANKRUPTCY WHILE THEY GET RICH ...

I have been a member of fitness usa for years. Back then, the place was cleaner. The workers were nicer and cared about us rather than their commission. I'm no rocket scientist but one would think that in the midst of all the new places that have opened up over the years that the owner, W.F. Hubner, would invest money into HIS company rather that sitting in his mansion while HIS company perishes. I guess he really doesn't care! Shame on you Mr. Hubner!

VERY RUDE EMPLOYEES!!!!!!! WAS TOLD LAST YEAR I COULD UPGRADE MY CHILDS MEMBERSHIP TO A LIFETIME ONE BY PAYING $350. I HAVE BEEN PAYING $19.00 A MONTH FOR THE PAST 4 OR 5 YEARS. NOW I CALL AND THE VERY RUDE B***CH TOLD ME I CANT DO THAT AND THE PRICE IS NOW $699. WHAT A JOKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THERE IS MORE EQUIPMENT IN MY SONS WEIGHT LIFTING CLASS AT SCHOOL THEN THIS DUMP!! WITH THE ATTITUDE OF THE B***CH I JUST SPOKE WITH IM REALLY SURPRISED THEY ARE STILL IN BUSINESS!!!!!!!!!! PLUS THEIR FACILITY IS NOT VERY CLEAN AFTER LOOKING AROUND AT OTHER GYMS. I GOT IMPETIGO FROM THEIR NASTY POOL. THIS IS THE FACILITY IN LINCOLN PARK. GOODBYE FITNESS USA. HELLO PLANET FITNESS. IM SOOOO SORRY I WASTED SO MUCH MONEY AT THIS POS PLACE. I SHOULD OF LISTENED TO MY SON.

It looks like I feel like the rest of the world when it comes to fitness USA. They shut down one of the two facilities in genesee county, and then try to charge existing lifetime members to use the cardio machines. On your off day you can use the cardio machines in what used to be the waiting room for an additional 96 dollars a year. What a joke. I already paid for a lifetime membership. Now you found a way to squeeze me for an additional 96 a year. Customer service is definitely not the managements strong point. I had an issue with the lack of facility, and the fact they want to charge for what I already have. The manager was very rude. What should I expect from someone that has worked in a failing corporation for her whole life.

I am a 19 year old female college student and I am in need of legal advice. In May of 2008 I went to Fitness USA in Southfield Michigan and tried out their free membership and worked with a trainer that day. I enjoyed the facility and the employees and I wanted to join. The employee informed me that I could join that day and if for so reason I wanted to cancel my membership I could do so within 30 days, so I thought that it was a great ideal to give it a shot and if I couldn’t maintain the membership, simply cancel it. About a week and a half later one of their representatives contacted me asking me about the membership and if I was enjoying it. I told the lady that unfortunately I would have to cancel it due to their closing times and my school/ work schedule. She said that it would not be a problem and that she would cancel out the membership for me. After about two months I noticed on my billing statements from the bank that Fitness USA was taking about monthly from my checking account. So, I immediately went to the bank and cancel my account and opened a new one. Then I contacted Fitness USA and the rep from their company said that I never canceled within the cancellation period and that the only way I could get out was if I had a medical condition that was noted from the doctor. I told her that I spoke to someone from the company within the cancellation they said that the membership would be cancelled. She basically said that there was no way she could help me and if I didn’t pay it would be sending to collections for non payment. Of course I didn’t pay because I cancelled within the withdraw period and I received a letter from Nation Credit Corporations saying that I owe them 1,200 dollars. I was in complete shock! I began doing research and I found out that I Fitness USA and National Credit Corporation are part of the same company, same President, same Vice President, same Executive Assistant, and same Business Location. I thought maybe I needed to report this to the Better Business Bureau. I looked on the web site for the BBB and found that there had been 99 complaints in the last 36 months about Fitness USA, the West Bloomfield location alone. But HERE is where it gets very interesting, I also found that the Vice President of BOTH Fitness USA and National Credit Corporation also just so happens to be A BOARD MEMBER of the Eastern Michigan Better Business Bureau. This is now standing on my credit report and I am unable to obtain credit cards or take out loans for school. Can someone please give me some advice on what I should do?

Hello All, I am also a long time member of Fitness USA (FUSA), who is very disappointed that the facilities are closing. I have enjoyed working out at FUSA despite the obvious negatives because I like the ladies only workouts, the pool, steam room, dry heat and jacuzzi. I would like to ask Mr. William F. Hubner if there is anyway he can rescue FUSA.

If anybody is interested in getting a class action lawsuit going, please contact me and lets put our resources together. Lets do this before they shut down completely! You can e-mail me at BPAL120@yahoo.com.

Re W F Hubner's statement. From your statement it appears you still own this franchise. If so, it is your responsibilty to know what is going on!!!!!! You should have realized sometime ago that there were issues. When was the last time you visited a facility? If you had visited a facility anytime over the last several years, you would have, if your eyesite is half way decent, realized there were problems with maintenance of the facilities; therefore PROBLEMS. Mr. Hoppin may have some responsibilty in the facilities deteriorating, but the "buck" stops with you!!!!! It appears to me that you, too, enjoyed the influx of "money". Be a man and accept your responsibilty!

I am the owner of this gym, I started this gym from the ground up and then let James P. Hoppin run it for me, that's when things fell apart. This guy has no common sense at all. He was in it for only one reason, the money. He's old and wants to retire now, that's why he's closing all the gyms. I'm sorry to all of you that spent thousands of dollars on your "Lifetime Membership" just so this guy could take it and go retire in Hawaii.

the lockers in the royal oak, michigan location - its outdated and lockers are shabby looking in pale blue. its not inviting to work out there. i have my lifetime membership since 1991 and have considered to work out at the newly build workout spa at corner of Woodward and 10 mile Rd, off of 696 freeway.

I have been member since I got out of school in 70, steadily gone down hill but still I supported this gym, You tried to get money out of me after I paid off my membership (lifetime). The person who managed these gyms need to get some education in business. All the gyms were filthy and not kept up and constantly broken. I moved to Caifornia for a while and went to your affiliate in LA. That one was ok and they helped out a lot on weight loss and training. Now you are closing all these stores and still bringing people in to sign up. Shame on you!

Fitness USA in Westland was a dump anyhow, not sorry to see it go. I bought a life time membership there back in the mid 80's and quit using it when I realized that there are so many other nicer places to go work out. To hell with their goofy hours, un-experienced rude staff and antiquated equipment. I've been going to Lifetime Fitness for the last few years and now I am spoiled. Totally worth the $50 per month that it costs. See ya Fitness USA Westland, maybe a nice restaurant will take your place on that prime corner.
