| Reply to Carol James......WE DID USE A TRAVEL AGENT. IF YOU HAD READ MY COMMENTS YOU'D SEE "AFFORDABLE TOURS" DID NOT INFORM US WE NEEDED VISA FOR BRAZIL. HOWEVER AFTER MUCH DISCUSSION, AFFORDABLE TOURS HAS MADE THINGS RIGHT.... I NOW CAN RECOMMEND THEM... |

| In reply to email above from WIlliam Downer - there is a slogan - if you don't use a Travel Agent, you travel alone! - how true this was in your case!!! Had you booked thru a Travel Agent, the first thing you would have been told is that you would need a visa! yes, you would have had to pay a little more, but in the end you would have saved yourself a great deal of stress and a lot of money, and you would have had someone 'at home' to help you out. let this be a lesson to you. |

DO NOT TAKE COSTA AS THEY WILL STEAL YOUR MONEY AND NOT HELP IN ANY WAY! MY WIFE AND I PLANNED THIS TRIP WITH AFFORDABLE TOURS LAST JUNE(ALSO AVOID THIS BOOKING SERVICE). WE ASKED ALL THE QUESTIONS WE COULD THINK OF TO HAVE CORRECT PAPERS ETC. BUT ONCE WE TRIED TO BOARD SHIP ON 2 DEC IN SAVONA WE WERE DENIED BECAUSE WE WERE TOLD WE HAD TO HAVE VISA FOR ENTRY INTO BRAZIL. NEITHER AFFORDABLE TOURS NOR COSTA HAD INFORMED US OF THIS SIMPLE REQUIREMENT. FURTHER AT LEAST 20 OTHERS WERE DENIED. WE WERE TOLD THIS "HAPPENS ALL THE TIME" BY COSTA BOARDING AGENT IN SAVONA TERMINAL. BUT ONLY TO AMERICANS AND RUSSIAN PEOPLE AS BRAZIL REQUIRES IT FROM THESE NATIONS BUT NOT EUROPEANS. THEY SAID POSSIBLY WE COULD GET VISA IN A FEW VARIOUS PLACES. WE WERE TOLD AT BRAZIAL CONSOLATE IN MYLAN OR ROME OR BARCELONA. COSTA ABANDONED US AT THE TERMIINAL. ALL OF US LEFT ON TRAIN IN HOPES OF SECURING VISA. MOST CHOSE TO TRAIN TO BARCELONA. WE CHOSE TO TRY IN MYLAN. WHO KNOWS HOW MANY MORE WERE DENIED BOARDING AS WE LEFT AROUND 2 AND SHIP LEFT AT 5. OUR 8 HOUR ATTEMPT THE NEXT DAY IN MYLAN AT BRAZIAL CONSOLATE FAILED. WE DON'T KNOW WHAT HAPPENED TO OUR FELLOW TRAVELERS BUT HEARD MADRID AIR TRAFIC CONTROLLERS HAD STRUCK SATURDAY AND NO FLIGHTS WERE POSSIBLE FROM SPAIN TO CATCH SHIP WITH VISAS HAD WE PROCURRED ONE. WHAT A NIGHTMERE. HAVING HAD TO MAKE NEW VACATION PLANS, BUY ADDITIONAL PLANE TICKETS, PAY FOR HOTEL ROOMS AND TRAIN FARES. ALL OF THIS MADE NO DIFFERENCE TO COSTA OR AFFORDABLE TOURS. ALL THEY HAD TO DO WAS NOTIFY THE AMERICAN AND RUSSIAN TRAVELERS OF THE NECESSITY OF HAVING THIS SMALL DOCUMENT AND MANY PEOPLE WOULD NOT HAVE HAD THEIR VACATION RUINED! this is how thy make money. THEY ARE DISHONEST AND THEIVES! WE WANT A FULL REFUND BUT ALL THEY SAY IS THEY ARE NOT RESONSIBLE FOR INFORMATION WE SHOULD HAVE KNOWN...
.BUT AFTER READING the above comments maybe missing the ship was a blessing in disguise.....WSD |

If only there was a no stars option, I would have chosen it. Just returned from a dire Costa Romantica cruise out of Singapore. Best described as a dated uncared for old tub, with poor management, chaotic organisation, demoralised crew and indiferent staff. Check in a riot, welcome a drink package sales pitch, cabin adequate but with slab pilows, grey towels, and no toiletries.
If you were a pasta lover, you would enjoy some of the food, but quality of everything was of the poorest, salad choices poor and they even ran out of green salads during the second week, In the tropics stale apples were the fruit du jour, and butter disappeared from the menu after 10 days. I was served a cheese soufflee one evening which could not be cut by a knife, clearly destined to be used as a missile I felt!
Entertainment was holiday camp standard, with unco-ordinated dancers, dreadful singers, and poor speciality acts, and to liven things up, daytime activities consisted of children's party standard games!! AVOID COSTA AT ALL COSTS would be my advice to anyone considering a cruise |

dear guest relations COSTA
with copy to: Line owner Carnival Headquarters

COMPLAINT
I am a platinum cruiser with Carnival.
Now on a Spirit Class Ship, for Costa, the Atlantica.
I have cruised on almost every quality cruise line in the world.
and over nearly the whole world, short of antartica.
I have cruised on many Spirit class ships with Carnival, and found them good.
really meeting my expectations for Carnival and the Spirit Class.
To that you may add such ships as several cruises on the Elation and such.
Now as to the Costa Atlantica, Staff, Design of "Hotel Management", and ship staff attitude and efficiency.
Today at lunch, there was no menu in English.
Though there was to be one.
And the waiter said there was one at one of the stations.
I watched him take my Italian menu, to the waiter station,
where he literally SLAMMED it down.
He then proceeded to get Spanish menus for guests at my table.
and spanish menus [8] for guests at nearby tables.
and ignored my request for an english menu.
While handing out spanish menus for EU guests.
I guess i am a bad guy. An american a**H***.
Before I got on the ship,
i was informed, and read,
that the official languages of the ship were italian and English.
and in some cases, a local language might be added for comfort of some other guests.
Believe me when i say, there is NO comfort for guests as to language in ENglish as to Dining staff.
My room steward's english is good.
as is the english at your guest relations desk.
I might as well add the rest.
a. On arrival, at the entrance to check in, there was NO greeting person from costa,
and 3 people standing in the doorway smoking cigarettes.
which made a cloud and was very offensive to my wife, who has some asthma.
b. When first talking to the "check in" person, we were sent into a LONG LINE, even though
this official costa person knew we did not have our printed documents.
c. On final arrival to ONE of TWO people checking in all 2,000 passengers [can you believe it?]
we were told we were in the wrong line and sent to guest relations to get our boarding form to fill in.
These check in people had NO computers. I had check in on line. A computer could have printed out my boarding form.
D. I then stood in line for guest relations. She had a cell phone sized "computer" and had a label printed out with
my name and cabin number. I then filled out, again, my boarding info.
E. I then stood in line [LONG LINE] again, for boarding check in.
f. On arrival at ONE of the TWO check in people, he simply took my form and put it in my passport and
passed us to the next step.
g. We went, as directed, to the Lido deck. and here are the facts.
h. The stands with hand cleaner are not obvious and not used by the hoard of people arriving.
i. the food and utensils to get the food, are handled by each guest and exposed to each guest as they are used.
in other words, the food is NOT picked up and placed on ones plate in a sanitary way.
j. I saw children and adults pick up, and put back down, pizza slices on the pizza tray, after taking a "look" at them.
so "handled" pizza for the next gues such as I. Kind of like POW camp standards of health.
k. The ship is old and care worn. and there are stains where spills have occurred on the carpets in the passageways, in in our cabin.
l. The only liquids offered on lido are: Hot water, water, ice, coffee. No: Hot tea, juice, punch, orange juice, apple juice, gand so on.
m. But there is a big push by all waiters to sell bottled water, and soda, and juices, and wine and so on and drinks. Where Costa makes money.
now i ask you, on a cruise, who can go all the way on water and coffee. This is not a Naval Vessel. I was a naval officer. for 5 years.
n. The dining room staff is angry and hostile, not full of smiles and accomadating. Frowns are the event du jour.
o. on a bright note, the indian steward for our cabin is a friendly, and nice guy, doing a good job. He cannot fix stains that should be removed by steaming
and commercial level carpet cleaning. His areas, with his tools, are clean and nice. old, but ok.
p. the cushions on the couch have been there since the ship was launched, and are broken down, and badly worn like a cheap hotel, 2 stars at best.
q. the food offered on the lido deck, in short, is poor quality, and poor choice. in short, it sucks. the worst i have seen on any ship, including russian
cruise ships.
I accept older ships. I can accept a care worn ship that is clean and neat.
What i cannot accept is food that is of poor quality ingredients, and poor preparation. cheaply done. not adequate drink selection such as even tea or
lemonade or punch. poor attitude of staff. Being he enemy of the dining room staff. and a care free attitude when i complain to guest relations on board.
they did not even want my name or cabin number.
R. and finally, for engineering staff, i took a drink of water from the faucet in my cabin to take my heart medicine. It had the absolutely clear taste of
algae growth in the system, leaching into the water flow. I know this because i have handled purified water systems for biotech companies, that faced algae
ridden inlet water as base entry supply. I was able to get the algae and the leaching out of the water by proper filtration that is simple and required
filters only. So could your staff, includinng taking the time, on service calls on the ship for clean up, to sterilize the water system of algae growth.
Putrid i say and shame on you. You obviously can filter it, as the water on Lido to drink is filtered and free of rank algae taste. I have never had hotel
water anywhere in the world taste that way, or on any other ship. Your engineering ops people allow dirty, putrid water on this ship.
so here is what I shall do, as to action.
a. I will depart this ship at the next stop and fly back to london.
b. I will give terrible reviews on the management, and ship line of Costa, and the owner line Carnival, as to management. You want to feed your guests crap
on an old ship, and sell beer and wine and drinks.
c. i will put these reviews in the ususal sites online, and speak what i believe is the truth, as an 5 star traveler who has been to over 120 nations, and
has taken over 100 cruises on many different lines.
d. i will never take costa again, and will warn all my friends, who cruise, about costa.
e. i will take holland america which is good, and sea born and such. I may take carnival IF i know he ship and route.
f. and to Bob Dickinson and the rest at the top, i say, screw you and the way you run costa line. it is crap.
kindest and truthful regards,
lawrence Thompson
formerly your big booster for carnival lines. |

WE HAVE CRUISED WITH YOU IN THE PAST, AND RATE YOUR CRUISELINE BETTER THAN BEST!
I SPOKE TO THE SECRETARY TO THE PRESIDENT OF YOUR COMPANY SOME YRS AGO. AT THAT TIME WE RESIDED IN CHAMPAIGN ILLINOIS USA. WHY I AM WRITING NOW, IS WE ARE OLDER AND DUE TO HANDICAPS CAN NOT TRAVEL NOW TO OUR CHAGRIN. WE BOTH REALLY ENJOYED THE BATH GEL IN YOUR CABINS, AND WONDERED IF YOU HAVE A STORE WHERE IT CAN BE PURCHASED. IS IT PERLIER? IF YOU HAVE A CATALOG OF ITEMS IT WOULD BE APPRECIATED, AM THINKING ABOUT GIFT GIVING SINCE OUR NAME IS "COSTA". IF I RECALL CORRECTLY, THE BATH GEL HAS A MINTY SCENT. THANKYOU FOR YOUR INFORMATION, AND VALUED TIME.
OUR EMAIL ADDY IS: FOXCOSTA@COMCAST.NET
OUR MAILING ADDRESS IS: 1729 INDEPENDENCE AVENUE URBANA, ILLINOIS 61802.
AGAIN THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME, AND YOUR WONDERFUL CRUISE LINE! WE WILL CHERISH THOSE MOMENTS FOREVER!
